When did the ugly sisters go ? wondering whether I'd ever have gone past them on the train.

Thanks Ged, I can't believe that I don't remember them. Only two things I remember from my train rides into town as a kid - Tate and Lyle and the lock

My mate Mike Murphy took those pics cos like you, he remembered passing all the industry along Great Howard St and Love Lane on the way into town on the train as a kid and got a sort of attachment to them and thanks to him captured it all prior to demolition. He gets a good mention on that page of my site. Harry Ainscough too, he was everywhere in Liverpool, a great photographer.

Ged, some inaccuraies on the page:
Two great pics of a busy dock road scene as a crane loads a locomotive at Brocklebank Dock, Bootle. 'No arms to Nigeria' states the political graffiti as a Ford Cortina, Ford Escort and Triumph Toledo are the 'in' cars. Notice the police jeep and Mini Cooper S panda cars.

The left hand picture. Cars from right. back of a Ford Corsair, Vauxhall Viva, Triumph 2000, front of a Triumph Herald.
Right hand picture. The Police car is a normal Mini 850, the Copper S' were all white. Behind the Mini is a Hillman Hunter. Ged, you got every car wrong.

Great site Ged.The photos of Gt Howard St show 'J Nickels & sons'.My eldest brother served his time as a sailmaker there. They also had a place by the Gladstone Dock. The owner was Trevor Jones aka Jones the vote. With his wife they were Lib councillors. He also owned Lambs down by the Baltic until it closed the other year.

The last time I saw Manchester Dock gates, they were in a big heap on the dockside. There was talk of them being preserved, but I wouldn't bet on it.
