    Post liverpool borough gaol

    HI ALL,
I'M A NEWBIE TO ALL THIS,SO I THOUGHT I'D SET THE BALL ROLLING BY ASKING IF ANYONE HAD ANY INFO' ON LIVERPOOL BOROUGH GAOL,AS I'VE FOUND LITTLE ABOUT IT ON THE NET,OR ANYWHERE ELSE!
IT WAS SITED IN GREAT HOWARD ST,AND WAS A DEBTORS PRISON,BUT IT WAS ALSO USED FOR FRENCH PRISONERS OF WAR,AFTER NAPOLEONS DEFEAT. I NOTICED ON YOUR LIVERPOOL FIRSTS,THAT IT STATES IT WAS THE FIRST PURPOSE BUILT PRISON IN THE WORLD????

    Hello Steve

Welcome to the site. We welcome your enquiry. Don't use all caps though, it's hard to read and is considered rude... sorry. Someone recently posted a pic of the Borough Jail. I looked for it but couldn't find it. Hopefully the poster will put it in this thread and come up with more information for you.

Here are a couple of sites -- not much on the first one but the second has some leads on where to find records from the prison:

    Default Liverpool Borough Gaol

The prison would have got its nickname from the French prisoners kept there during the Napoleanic Wars (NB there is a memorial to their dead in St John's Gardens)
