    Default Hello

An interesting site, although I left Liverpool in 1958 I have visited a few times since. I enjoy the photographs that are posted, my memory is of course somewhat foggy, the pictures certainly bring back the memories.
My Grandparents lived on Mazzini street, off Netherfield road of course the place has changed since I was there last with the original road gone it seems, to be replaced by Mazzini close.

    Hi Gerard
It's been a long time since I was in the area so things are somewhat foggy but I think that the old Mazzini street that I remember could be the same as Mazzini Close. My Grand parents and an Uncle lived at one end of Mazzini street and we used to get access by a set of 19 steps from the east side, possibly what is known as Abram street. I can see by the google maps that of course everything has been rebuilt and even if the names are similar that maybe the position of the roads has changed.
What I have been searching for is a 1940's era street map just to confirm my thoughts, I have looked at an old 1850 map but other than confirming Roscommon street and a few other streets are still there it doesnt show Mazzini street.
I remember that when I visited the area when I was about 7-12 years old that a great deal of the area had suffered from the blitz and was nothing but leveled ground.
My dad took me to a market down on Scotland road ( I think ) a few times.
I do remember having a lot of fun with my cousins down there. They finally moved to Kirkby along with my Nan when the pulled the old houses down.
I was born in Finch Lane almost opposite the Yewtree pub, the one that was in the movie Formula 51, supposed to be in Manchester though

    Welcome Tricky.

While Gerard's looking for maps of that period (They'll have them in Humanities in Central Library) here's how Mazzini Street was in 1924.
    (OS map from LRO).

That's the Tivoli cinema near Garibaldi Street.
If anybody has any photos of it?

Excellent, thank you, just what I was looking for, I can see clearly the access we used was from Abram street and was part of the back entry to the houses.

    Great.
