    Default St Anne’s Street, 1975

The last post was about Liverpool pioneering pre-cast concrete. Today’s is about the city’s role in pioneering the uses of cast-iron for structural purposes in buildings. It is often said, incorrectly, that Ironbridge near Telford, was where the Industrial Revolution started – following Abraham Darby’s construction of the cast-iron bridge that still stands today as [...]

Fantastic Colin. I remember that building. What a shame it was lost. Anyone know how the fire started?

I remember the Owen Owen warehouse very well. My mate worked there. On the right, just out of shot, was a small upholstery shop and next to that was a Higson's pub. I can't remember the name just now. I remember Letheren's timber merchants. On the opposite corner of Queen Ann Street was E A Clare & Son who made snooker tables. I worked there between 1971 and 1977 as an upholsterer making bar seating and chairs.
Just around the corner from Letheren's was the Derby Arms pub, a Tetley house managed by Pat Molloy and his wife. Some memories of that area, Mansfield Street, Hunter Street and the Four Squares.

Ronnie, the pub was the Wellington. I watched that fire and also Holy Trinity church going up in flames in 1969 - the other side of Springfield. It wasn't me though - honest. Just one thing about the thread title though Colin, it's St. Anne Street.

It's ironic that after it burnt down it was replaced by a fire station. I remember it well, The Wellington (it was known as The Higsons) was frequented by most of my relatives.

Thanks Ged! As I recall, it was a good bit cleaner and tidier than The Derby Arms.
