    Default Herdman books

I was half watching one of those antique auction programmes yesterday - two experts spend a thousand pounds and see which of them makes the most profit. Wasn't paying too much attention until the guy bought volumes one and two of a Liverpool history by someone called Herdman.

Wonder if this is the same guy?

He sold the books on for £500 to someone he knew who was a scouser with and interest in the city's history.

    Hi Ged,
I think the books I saw were actually authored by Herdman. Lots of pictures but they looked like ink drawings rather than watercolours.

    Hi Guys

The book might have been this one:

PICTORIAL RELICS OF ANCIENT LIVERPOOL. Accompanied with descriptions of the antique buildings, etc. compiled from original evidences, private muniments, and unpublished collections.
    HERDMAN, W.G.

Available now on ABE Books with one copy described by one bookseller as follows:

Brown, Barnes & Bell. Liverpool., 1878. Folio. 2 vols. pp. iv, xix, 60, (2); 68, xvi, (6). With 72 hors-texte plates with descriptive letterpress. Plates reproduced using the autotype process. Original red half-morocco, banded spine, gilt. Gilt title on front boards. A.e.g. Spine and hinges repaired. The drawings from which the plates are reproduced are principally from original sketches made by the author during a period of more than fifty years, and reproduced in permanent autotype photography; which faithfully reproduces the variegated tones and shading of the original drawings. A fine architectural retrospective of Liverpool's most prominent monuments and buildings. Herdman's study of old Liverpool was first published between 1843-56 with lithographed illustrations. Sales of the volumes were so rapid that this later work was published with autotype plates.

Price a cool US$ 670.36 from one bookseller and US$ 1266.24 for another copy described as "Subscriber's edition, [Liverpool, printed by Henry Greenwood] privately published by the author, 1857."

    Hi Chris,
Yes - I think that looks about right, but there were two volumes of the books I saw. Wish I'd been paying more attention.
    Cheers,
    Kevin
