In case anyone else is interested, I have just received the following information from a fellow enthusiast from Preston whom I met in Hightown last week. He's just emailed me as follows:
I think I have worked it out from 1960 and 1962 timetables.
The 7:45 pm Fish from Law Junc (suspect this is marshalled from other Scottish locations) arrived at Preston 12:16 am and departed at 12:36 am for Manchester Oldham Road, this gave sufficient time to split the train at Preston and form a Liverpool portion which departed 1:0 am as per your timetable.
The 1962 A & D book for Preston shows the same working, the Law Junc arrived 3M13 on platform 7 at Preston, the Liverpool Exchange train 3K22 departed from platform 6, this movement possibly due to brake van and /or loco requirements. There was a scissor crossover on these platforms for this kind of movement.

Now all I need to find out is what stock made up this train . . .
