    Default Houghton Street c1963

Houghton Street was once a busy street connecting Williamson Square and Clayton Square. It is still there but one side is taken up by St John’s Market and the other by what were George Henry Lee’s and Owen Owens. This is an interesting colour photograph taken just before the buildings were demolished to make way [...]

Facinating, this era seems to be a neglected part of our history.

The bend in the street where the Chinese restaurant is, is where the the base of the tower is. You are looking towards Clayton Square and the corner of the square is seen. The path of the street is still there. You can see the buildings have been neglected because of the CPOs. Owen Owen is on he right of the picture. just off frame. A part of it can bee seen if you double click the picture.

We lost a hell of a lot around that area. If they were here today renovated they would add so much character.

Clayton Square ceased to be a square as such when tram lines were run straight through it. Then the building of Owen Owen did the rest.

Now I get it, Thanks waterways. The road looks alot wider as well. I know this sounds stupid, but I didnt think there was a chinese restaurant back there in the 60s. I didnt even know we ate chinese food over here unless of course you where chinese . . Most probably because my mum was an old fashioned good english food freak. and I led a sheltered life. ha ha.

I had relatives that lived in it. It you went to a restaurant it was always Chinese, as there was few others. Steak place? We didn't know what they were. I thought all restaurants were Chinese and all chips shops run by Chinese selling Chinese take-aways. I was amazed that chips shops elsewhere sold only fish, chips and some pies.

When I was growing up. I only ever knew one chinese chippy, and my schoolfriends dad had that, in Muirhead Avenue. I never went to it, but did frequent it a few years earlier when English People had it. ha ha Just goes to show how different two sides of a city where at the time.

I reckon the building on the other side of the tram in this LRO pic is the same one shown at the far end of Colin's.

I had relatives in West Derby and it was like going to the Outer Limits to me. Nothing seemed to happen there. Few people in the streets. I only knew streets full of people. People everywhere, of all types. Foreign sailors were common. Coolie crews playing football in their bare feet with the locals on waste ground. Chinese women in long platts walking down the road in a line behind each other on tip-toes in dark blue short Chairman Mao type tops. West Indian kids, local black Liverpool kids, the lot. Few Indian, but a friendly Egyptian with big mustache ran a local shop.
