Wow Waterways it must have been exciting seeing all those exotic looking people, well it would have been to me. As far as I know, there where no ethnic minority groups/families living in my area whilst I was growing up, if there where I dont ever remember seeing them. How times have changed. I have Chinese/Black/Malaysian/ Indian friends now. And love listening to there stories of life back in their native countries. I find it fascinating to know all about their cultures . My friend who comes from Zimbabwe loves Liverpool, but deep down her heart is still back in her own country and always will be. She talks about her family, and of her grandmother who still lives in a little village. I have saw photos and the grandmother practically lives in poverty. Sorry if I have gone off thread. I do get carried away. hahaha

The Golden Phoenix Chinese restaurant moved not far away just inside St John's Precinct when it was built. They had a branch in Hanover Street which has just closed down.

No it wasn't exciting. It was normal to me, as that is all I knew.

My friend Sukhulo went home last Christmas to see her family, her dad is away alot of the time, as he had to find work in South Africa, so even tho her parents are still married, they live apart for the majority of the time. Thats quite sad really.

Fantastic Photograph again Colin......and what a tragic loss!

I hate the City Council, they've done more damage to Liverpool than the Luftwaffe!

A fantastic photo. The dogleg street line is still there now, pedestrianised. I'd never seen what was here before, and in colour too - wow. Looks better than what's there now.

Not a parking meter in sight and even a parking space. When I first started driving, getting around Liverpool was a dream, also I was a little kid when this photo was taken.

When I look at these photos I always wonder what Liverpool would have been like if Merseyrail was created in the 1940-50s and not 1970s, with the tunnel to Everton plan instead of the Loop. The city would have been so much easier to get around and dictated that certain centres would remain due to proximity to an underground station, as in London. An earlier and slightly more comprehensive Merseyrail would have held back the intrusion of the car which tore huge parts of the city away.

I remember going to the opening of St Johns Tower, when the Queen was there. Unfortunetly the only glimpse I got of the Queen was her red hat! I do however remember going up to the top of the tower. It was amazing up there, looking down over Liverpool.

I worked on the tower when under construction, as a kid. Just a raw concrete pole with two concrete saucers and small crane on top.

I have had a few people asking what was the name of the pub in the photograph - it was The Belmont.

Thanks for the pic Colin! (and Waterways) I remember the street well! perhaps my memory fails me,but I thought it was Blacklers building not Owen Owen's on the corner? I think Owen Owens was on London Road at that time! Hope I'm not causing confusion!!!!

Hi Norm, Blacklers was on the corner of Great Charlotte Street - which is out of the photograph (you had to go from Clayton Square towards Lime Street up Elliot Street). Owen Owens is on the right of the photograph (it was separated from George Henry Lees by Houghton Lane) and is now a Tesco Metro. TJ Hughes was/is on London Road.
