    I have just returned from a few days break – so straight back into the 1960s. The photograph was taken before Byrom Street was widened- removing the buildings on the right.     Good post Colin.The fate of the black tower has been mentioned here before,but not with any specific clues to it's final destination,but probably landfill??? I remember it vaguely, and can't believe it was removed,especially as it's twin,survives!

    I clearly remember that. Where has it gone, can't see them dumping it.

    Wasn't there one on the other side of the water? ie where the old bus terminal was when you got of the the boat and up the gangway something ???? square it was called.

    It's on the Birkenhead side of the Tunnel. Just before you join the A41.
