I'm going to ask a dumb question about this pic of the day - why is the water spurting out here ? and does it spurt out constantly or just at certain times ? Sorry if I sound thick is it to do with the low tide ?
one for Waterways ?
I assume is is to keep the mud moist. That is the Brunswick river lock which faces southish. In hot weather it could dry out being directly in line with the sun. If it is allowed to go hard it would build up with the next layer washed in on the tide, and require expensive dredging.

Deprived of its unique dockland waters Liverpool
becomes a Venice without canals, just another city, no
longer of special interest to anyone, least of all the
tourist. Would we visit a modernised Venice of filled in
canals to view its modern museum describing
how it once was?

Here's my fuzzy effort, from Saturday.A field of rape seed,in Thornton. (Anyone know how,or why, it got it's unfortunate name?) 25-5-10.
Nice pic, Steve. A quick search and wikipedia gave this answer
Rapeseed (Brassica napus), also known as rape, oilseed rape, rapa, rappi, rapaseed and (in the case of one particular group of cultivars, canola) is a bright yellow flowering member of the family Brassicaceae (mustard or cabbage family). The name derives from the Latin for turnip, rāpum or rāpa, and is first recorded in English at the end of the 14th century.
