X in the city was the Hippadrome wasn't it. I liked that place, especially the couches on the half landing - dead comfy when you needed a sit down.

I'm not owning up to knowing exactly where that building is ;o)
They were both cinemas.
The Futurist opened in 1912 as the Lime Street Picture House, and the Scala opened next door in 1916.
The first manager of the Scala was Vivian Van Damm, recently portrayed on TV by Bob Hoskins as the first manager of the famous Windmill Theatre in Soho.
Both cinemas were eventually taken over by ABC who closed them when they tripled the Forum/ABC (over the road).
The Scala became the Hippodrome and is now X in the City, advertised as a Superior Gentleman's Club. Honest.
This is the Scala from a 1916 programme.
The front was damaged during the war, and was repaired in a modern style.
I remember going to the Futurist to see Earthquake in 'sensurround', the seats would rattle in sync with the action on the screen. 2 further films, Rollercoaster and Battle at Midway, were shot using the same process before it was scrapped. I wonder how much the mangers of the Furturist paid to kit the cinema out!
I also spent of a lot of my wages in the early 1980's on clothes from Harold Ian, a couple of doors down.
