I have thought the same about sand sculptures that you see at the beach, especially on holiday abroad. When you consider the talent and effort it takes to create a sand sculpture, and it won't last very long.
Slightly different subject, but I went to view a Mandala at the museum - amazing to watch !
The monks demonstrate the meticulous discipline it takes to create this amazing work of art. They use coloured sand and it's very time consuming and tedious work blowing the grains of sand into place. They use little blow pipes like fine straws.
The finished results are ceremoniously destroyed in an instant. This is to demonstrate the Buddhist belief that nothing in life is permanent and we shouldn't hold onto worldly, materialistic things.
