I'd never really paid any attention to this beautiful building until yesterday, but I think it's very nice indeed. I don't know much about it other than that the sign says it's the Greek Orthodox Church Of St. Nicholas. The church is just by the Rialto in Toxteth.

St Michaels in St Michaels Hamlet, designed by Thomas Rickman who also designed the"iron church" St Georges in Everton. Built by John Cragg the owner of the Mersey Iron Foundry and friend of the designer so both churches used cast iron in abundance.

Nice pics of St Michaels, I know that there is some rivalry between St Michaels-in-the-Hamlet and St. Georges, Everton over who was the first 'cast iron church'.

Both were built by Cragg/Rickman, St Georges I think was first... but the argument runs that a lot of St Georges superstructure is still in stone, whereas St Michaels is entirely cast iron, with brick basically 'filling the gaps'.

I'm no engineer so I can't tell you if that's right, but it's what i've heard!

Here's some old photos of the inside of this beautiful church. The church was built in the mid to late 1860s and served the Greek shipping merchants and community that settled in Liverpool.

It was the Sefton Park Assembly Rooms originally. I believe it later became a cinema

A very unique photo of the Greek Church taken from the top of a crane during the building of the Rialto.

Thanks for posting this one Samp. As well as St Nicholas Greek Church, it shows the Welsh Presbyterian Church with its roof still on and also the derelict Georgian terrace in Berkley St, opposite the Greek Church. Photos of this latter building are rare too.
