    Default Bunneys 1950s

I must admit I do not have much background on Bunneys store. It had long gone by the time I arrived in Liverpool. Henry Greenwood, the outfitters, apparently bought the site (if not the business) in the late 1950s. Their new store was opened on the site in 1958 – so the photograph was taken [...]

Colour photos from the 1950s are very rare.

Bunney's Whitechapel Store was taken over by Greenwood's of Bradford in March 1956.
Greenwood's also took over Dunn's, on the adjacent corner, in the 1990s.
    That building is now McDonald's.

    A book on Schools?
That would be a mammoth undertaking.

Why isn't there a history of Liverpool Police?
    The Firemen have been covered.

Shops, Schools, Police - yes a truly mammoth task.

These don't nearly go a smidgen of the way but is the best there is to offer regarding schools at present.

Usual thought provoking photo Colin, Thanks.

Is that a 'Greenwood' sign above the sun blind on the Church St. side?

Good point. I am a Narpo member and there is a friend of mine in Narpo who would be capable of writing such a book. He seems to be half considering it but there is nothing as far as I know other than a few books writen by ex officers.

There has been a history of the police already. I am sitting on another police history (by Terry Cook) but am waiting until times improve (could be a bit of a wait unfortunately). However, I have doubts about how well it would sell knowing many people's ambivalent attitudes towards authority. Schools are different - most people having spent their formative years in them. Shops are a bit more difficult - although a pictorial record of the great 'lost' institutions such as Woolworths, Owen Owens, Blacklers - and, shortly, Lewis's has great appeal. We've all shopped in them and many have worked in them (even George Harrison). Liverpool has a great place in retail history - it would make a fascinating book with the right content.

Just considering the sense of loyalty, to a shop like G.H.Lee's,which was really John Lewis, for many years! I wonder why they never went for the rebrand, till they moved to L1? That could be a history in itself!
