I also found the Panama Canal fascinating, going through several times on Panamax bulkers. The speed at which the ship raises in the locks is awesome.
That Atlantic Steam Navigation Company used a few of them on the Preston to Larne run, I remember in the early 70s the Captain of one of them was shot dead by the IRA while sat in one of the dockside bars.

I last went through the Panama Canal in April 2008 on QE2, still very interesting and still unchanged, but they are building a new set of locks to take the giant container ships that have been built. They have to go round the Horn at the moment. Go on to the Panama Canal web cam. it has Live cameras at Gatun Locks, Mirafloras locks, Centennial Bridge, and also shows the removal of a very high hill where the new locks are to go. you can see the ships coming and going 24/7.
This is the Panama Canal web cam

some very interesting views. of the locks at both ends and inbetween.
you can change the angle of the cameras and zoom in on the ships.
Many Thanks Cap'n! I am a member of the Sues Veterans Association, and regularly look into the 'Small Wars' (Suez) site most interesting, and will enjoy looking up the links you supplied, Cheers
My daughter had to write a piece on The Suez Crisis for her history course. It's about the international political background. If anyone would like to read it, send me a PM with your E-mail address and I'll send it along.

I would be interested to read that Ronnie, to get a younger persons view on the conflict. I've PM'd you. Ta.
