    Default Islington c1965

In the forty years I have lived in Liverpool, the city has undergone remarkable changes. Of course, if you take any forty year span in its history, change has taken place. The town of 1840 was substantially larger than that of 1800, and the following forty years some even more significant change. What was perhaps [...]

Colin, you come up trumps once again. Living just a few hundred yards along Christian Street in Gerard Gardens, this pub, which i've only seen in black and white before was known locally as Cassons and was one of my parents locals.

Was your doctor Doctor Goldberg Ged?

He was just off Islington and I used to always be amazed at all the Shelves behind him full of colored pills

No H, our family Dr Was Dr Connolly in the old Georgian buildings of Everton Brow, the likes of which Colin talks about being lost in his write up here. When those great big houses were demolished Dr Reid took over and was in the ground floor flat in a block of 3 storey flats on Watmough Street off Everton Brow. He later moved into Great Homer Street health centre.

I know the one you're on about though in Islington Square. That's still a Doctors as well as the yellow fever clinic now.

Hope you don't mind Colin. A little then and now shot. Yours from c1965 and a Liverpool Records Office shot of the TGWU building from 1979. The original Union building was on the corner from where the man is crossing on Colin's pic, in another lost fine georgian building which can be seen on my site. Which was best - vote now.

My local chippy and I know everyone says their local chippy is the best but that was something else. It is said that the stars playing the Empire even sent out for grub from there. I know of people who said they bypassed their own nearest chippy to get to it. It's just out of view on Colin's pic, to the right of Hyman's yard (painted green). I can still remember the layout. As you went in the door, the front window to your right, the counter was on the right and there was an old wooden oak table and a white marble one facing it with a wooden bench that ran the length of the wall facing the counter in case you wanted to eat in. The spud machine was on the wall opposite the window and it was always busy, a hive of activity as Johnny and his brother Frank and sister Maria served the local community for years. Frank was well known and well loved in the Holy Cross community and drank in the pubs around Standish Street off Great Crosshall St.

Someone coming out of Gianelli's in 1966 with their dinner wrapped in last night's echo. Islington Place ran between Hymans and Gianellis. That's the side of the Walker Art Gallery in the background.

When I worked at Clares in the 70s, the chips from Gianelli's used to come wrapped in a variety of revolutionary socialist newspapers. I remember having my chips out of a paper with an obituary of Mao in it. Great pics Ged!

You're probably right! I wouldn't have objected to reading about the Milan Opera or a match report of Roma versus Fiorentina!
