    Default QR2 for sale?

    I spelt QE2 WRONG
    NOT QR2

Dubai may sell QE2 to tackle debt crisis
The high-profile "trophy asset" of Dubai's boom years may have to be sold to pay off the emirate's mounting debts.
    Todays News.

What a waste, that ship should have been preserved opposite the Cunard Buildings, where it was designed at the Pier Head, docked in a Lagoon that would be tideless and used for tourists , as a Hotel , Offices, and part of the University, night clubs, weddings, conference centres good for weekends etc. it was only £50m. It will now probably go to scrap
Paul Macartney could have bought that for the City. he would not have even noticed it ,all his money came from the kids of Liverpool.

We Brits have no real regard for our heritage,as Captain Kong said, now and in the past, the QE2 was conceived in Liverpool and should spend the rest of her days there too. She would make a magnificent addition to the City,it certainly would be a major tourist attracion and could be used as a convention centre/hotel etc, etc.Where are ll those public Liverpudlian worthies who could head up a subscription list to help buy her back. As poor as I am,I would donate what I could to help buy her. Come Yoer's ,let's get a campaign started to bring the old girl home!

Does she really belong here though Brian? Wouldn't Southampton be more apt?

Southampton does not have a waterfront like Liverpools. it is all ddocks and prohibited entry for security. No one can see it from the road.
In Liverpool, it would be facing the original Cunard Building and headquarters. It was desisgned on the top floor of that building. It would make a fortune for Liverpool, making several hundreds of jobs a least. and everyone would be able to see it.

We could soon find a volunteer crew to bring her back. There is more value £50m. in the artifacts on board than the £50m. for the ship.

Worth breaking her up then Captain. That's what the money men will say.

Thats right Malcom, There is no sentiment in business. She is past her regular seafaring job with her surveys and is only fit for the static hotel etc business or Alang. she is almost there from the Gulf.
Who ever comes up with the highest price will get her.

She looks to be right at home at the landing stage, much more so than the hodge-podge of new construction down there. If Hamburg had been her home port she would probably now be tied up next to the Cap San Diego and Rickmer Rickmers. Oh well, we all have to go one day.

Could be in the Princes Dock. Better than a barge-boat-way. OR on the bottom in the river on the river wall.

The ship has no real deep connections with the city, it had London on the stern. It rarely came here. McCartney would be better saving the Royal Iris, which most would have seen and been on than some ship most have never seen.

I could think of better ships to moor here rather than the QE2, Ships with big Liverpool connections: HMS Wimbrell, Manxman, Royal Iris. Some old Liverpool made hulks in the Falklands.

The ship has no real deep connections with the city, it had London on the stern. WW

The QE2 was registered in Southampton, the first Cunard ship not registered in Liverpool. She is now registered in TUVALU. If she was registered in Liverpool she would still have Tuvalu on her stern. But that could change with the ownership.
Its connections with the City is that it was concieved, designed and all the drawings done in Liverpool in the top floor of the Cunard Buildings on the Pier Head. Also a few thousand Liverpool Seafarers have crewed the ship over the last 40 years, I have also done five half world cruises on her.
If the ship could have been brought to Liverpool it would employ a thousand or more Liverpool people. a few more than on the Iris. Liverpool needs jobs.
and it would have been a magnificent centre piece at the Pier Head creating many more jobs for the Tourist trade, millions of pounds for the City.
A tideless lagoon could have been built around her just the way they have done in Long Beach California for the Queen Mary, she still has Liverpool on her stern and is a magnificent show piece there. I have stayed on her as a hotel ship several times. The Queen Mary has been there in Long Beach for nearly 50 years now, is very successful and has provided thousands of jobs over the years.
The QE2 could not get anywhere near the Princess Dock. The locks are no where near wide enough or long enough.
She has a beam of 105 feet and a length of 976 feet and a draught of 31/32 feet depending on the weight of her stores and bunkers.
She only just squeeses into the Locks in the Panama Canal.
Macartney could still buy the others including the Iris and never miss the money, what is he saving up for at his age. he is only where he is today because of the Liverpool kids who got him going, time he put something back.
