Thanks Spike,I married a girl from the area ,Fletcher Grove off Edge Lane
The Edge Lane Hotel was on the Corner, so I know the area well.
Used to bunk in to see Liverpool Stanley playing rugby in the old dog track in Church Rd

    Default Pubs of Liverpool

I keep looking at all these pics of Liverpool pubs as they come up but
nary a one of the Medlock which used to stand at the top of Medlock Street
Kirkdale. Virtually nothing remains of Medlock Street (was it a casualty of the
War and the pub with it?). If so, has anybody a photo of the pub as it was?
Similarly, has anyone a recent picture of the Melrose on Melrose Road?

    hI 18stanley,
found these pic's of Medlock st,not the best, and only one of the Medlock pub! I used to live a couple of doors down Rumney rd,and passed the pub every day,on the way to school! I'll have a look for any pic's of the Melrose, though I'm sure Ged must have one/some!?

This has been converted to flats

These were taken last year. The Royal on the corner of Bankhall which is very similar to the Melrose in structure now has scaffolding around it after years of lying burnt out, don`t know if its for demolition or a rebuild. They were both Threlfalls pubs

I believe the Shakespeare is set to re-open. That row on Stanley Road from Boundary Street to Balliol Road of the pubs still standing currently looks like.

    The Cunard. - Closed.
    The Stanley Bar - Closed.
    The Lighthouse - Closed.
The Prince of Wales - Open.
    The Knowsley - Closed.
    The Royal - Closed.
    The Shakespeare - Closed.
    The Pitch Pine - Open.
    Swifts - Closed.

The Royal, Stanley Rd was surrounded by scaffolding a few days ago. I'll have a look today and see if there's been any change since. I think all the roof has gone.

    Edit: pub is still there.

Many thanks GD for showing me that photo - I had no idea that it was no longer a pub! I can remember Ged's pic and his info that it had had a fire but was cheered to hear that it seemed to be ready for a new lease of life (as a pub of course). I'm sure he'll be as sad as I am at the news. It's shattering to think of all the changes that have taken place in that area in the last 60 years. At least the Melrose is still standing, complete with its name and in all its glory.
Thanks also Steve for your pics of the Medlock and Medlock Street. The pub still exists apparently but again the street has virtually disappeared with the rest of the "river" streets.
