I've been frequenting the pubs of Liverpool City Centre recently between lectures...(should I admit that?? )

How good is the Richmond nr Williamson Square??? Never been in but always seems to have a good crowd inside. Been in the Rat and Parrot a few times, but I think its quite expensive...Yates is alright.

Great photo of the Railway Gregs Dad,that used to be my watering hole when I was home during the 60's. The bar was spit and sawdust and the snug was just about acceptable, but the company was convivial. The old regulars were nearly all ROF employees who lived on the South Park estate. There was a Malayan Teachers Training College at the back of the estate and you would get the odd one or two students pop in for a half. A different world .Nice to see it looking so good,

Hi Brian it has always been known as "a mans pub" if you were with a lady you always took them further along the road to the Carter`s Arms, which the majority of the Malayan students frequented.

Another pub goes bust. The Queen Anne on Fazakerley Road.
It`s bad enough the pub closing but what was more important they used to have a great bowling green where we played league and competition games.

What a lovely pub.. Why do they go bust is my question? Is it location or just poor management.. They seemed to have been there long enough, so,,any reason noted?

    Nice pic GDad..

    Nice pic GDad..
Its a combinaiton of factors i'd say. Areas of terraced housing being gradually replaced by low density dwellings has meant many pubs inevitably closed as time went on, but in the fast few years its become really noticeable how may are shutting and it cant be a coincidence that its at the same time as the smoking ban and ridiculously cheap beer in supermarkets .

Ta for that analysis SteH.. It is a shame that they couldn't re-invent themselves and keep the culture alive for a bit of a social in the area.. Sign of the times..as you so indicate.. Ta..

I'd say that of all of the ones i've photographed over 2006/7 - and it's all the pubs still left in Liverpool, those that are closed were so before the smoking ban - look at the whitefield, peel, vernon, united powers, phythian etc.

I don't think hardened smokers will be put off standing under or in the makeshift covers that a lot of erected or even standing outside, in fact many have said it's started getting people talking to strangers again as they all huddle like the underdog/outcasts with a common cause that they've somehow been labelled with one swoop of a government law.

I'd say the drinking at home with cheap supermarket beer is a definite factor in some closing though. It seems that all newly opening bars is now restricted to the city centre instead of corner locals.

I'd also say that the rot started for some as early as the 1980s when densely populated tenement communities were shipped out with only a quarter of that mass remaining in the new build houses. I'm thinking of some like the Wedding house, Prince Alfred on Everton Brow, Lamplighter, tugboat, Seven Stars, Great Eastern, Falklands, Prince of Wales, Legs of Man, The Swan, Hare and Hounds, Peppers, The Pontack, Courthouse, Denbigh Castle, Andy caps, New York and Soho Arms - all closed prior to the smoking ban and what a depressing list around my old area just off the top of my head.

Scottie road lost around 70 of its pubs between Addison st and Silvester st just because of the Kingsway tunnel.

Check these pages out and see what is closed or now demolished
