I know Joe, I pass it every weekend. It was the half way house (the Lynch's had it), then Dicky Lewis's then the new half way house but currently closed again.
I wonder how many halfway houses there are in Liverpool? For a couple of years I drank in the one in Woolton. Got banned in early 70's for having a hurdle race across tables in the large back room - the one that became the restaurant. Thought it a bit mean of the landlord but the fact that we were both nude might have had something to do with it.
Went back after two years as I heard that the manager who'd barred me had long since left. Went to the bar in the back room (not yet a restaurant) and queued for ages to get a drink. Increasingly frustrated as people the bar maid recognised, who arrived long after me, got served first - she was actually passing pints over my shoulder to people behind me. Eventually I let my frustration show and a guy came up behind me and asked me what the problem was - he was the new gaffer. I said something about the 'silly cow' behind the bar giving preferential treatment to customers arriving long after me.
His response was '...that silly cow is my wife'.
Back in the place for 15 minutes after two years absence and barred again!
The old Piano Bar on Derby Lane has been totally done out and refurbished , now called The Regency, very nice too !!
