Your not wrong there, there must be one a fortnight closing now in the city. As recently as 1995 I remember going on a crawl from Anfield to town starting off in the Valley and we had about ten pints. Now we'd only manage 3.

    Default Chester's lost pubs...

Liverpool is not alone in having lost so many of its old pubs. I thought you may be interested in my feature, 'The Vanished Pubs of Chester' - which you can find here-

When just starting out on the ale trail at aged about 17 and knocking around the Birkett Street tenements/four squares area, we would start out at the Soho Arms, head along Greaty to The Lamplighter and the 7 Stars then perhaps take in the New York and Old Campfield before heading down to the Tugboat which was a great little walk and night and I think only the Old Campfield is the only one of those trading just now.

The A554 Tower Road is on the other side of the railway and provides a link between Seacombe and Woodside. Watson Street is to the right and runs upto Conway Street and Charing Cross (via Rendell Street)

    Now, how about your competitors??

Meadows Hotel, Watson Street/Conway Street, Bhd I love the ornate detailing on this building but I don't think it's a pub anymore.

The Cygnet, St Anne Way/Watson Street, Bhd Now derelict and was suffering from vandalism on the gable end.

The North Western, Cleveland Street, Bhd Still going strong despite the fact that most of it's old neighbourhood has been cleared and built on with new housing.

Hope you enjoyed this part of Birkenhead; It was certainly a pleasure to walk round en-route home to Liscard.

Gerard, Thanks for yer digging, much appreciated!
Wallasey you are a legend. Thank you so much for the pic. my computer has been off so only just found it.

    Thanks again mate

Your welcome; it wasn't a diversion really seeing as it was on the way home!

it will be interesting to see if these pubs are here in a few years time after Peel have done their work. Wirral MBC might dual Tower Road but I would imagine that this would go straight up to Charing Cross. Well, that's what I would do anyway.

Ned Kellys is an Australian bar!! The list has missed off The Liffey in Renshaw St which often has live music and in my opinion does the best Guinness in the city.

smashin old boozer is the hole in the wall in a little street off Dale St.

Too many old fashioned pubs have been demolished. The city is becoming too full with these horrible trendy cattlemarkets full of dance music. For a start you can't have a conversation in them.

Great place the Hole in the Wall, just a pity they were forced to start letting women in under the sex discrimination act.

I lived in Philharmonic Court (to the right in your photo, through the gates) while attending university, but oddly enough didn't go to the Belvedere very often. Shot from 1984:

I remember that being on the news. A group of women went in and drank a few pints and there were only Pee stalls in the toilets.
