Thumbs up Old Liverpool Court Dwellings Showing Living Conditions Maps Future Plans

    All images courtesy LRO:

    1. OS 25 map section of Eldon Street and area 1893.jpg Shows Eldon Street before Brodie's concrete flats - site is the courts between school and Vauxhall Road.
    2. A view of a passageway into maddox street court.jpg A view of a passageway into a court. On the right wall in the foreground is a plaque identifying No. 3 Court. The walls of the passageway are kept apart with wooden braces that reach from first to second storey level. The paintwork on the wall in the left foreground is peeling badly. A gutter is set into the flags to the left of the passageway.
    3. Two outside toilets in a courtyard rathbone street.jpg A view of two outside toilets in a courtyard. The doors of the toilets are open, and the insanitary conditions within can be clearly seen. Large pools of standing water gather outside the toilets, where two girls in poor dress stand, smiling for the camera. The walls of the buildings are limed.
    4. Number 6 Court in Comus Street.jpg A photograph of No. 6 Court in Comus Street. Tenement dwellings are visible on both sides of the court. The court is crowded with women and children. The court looks dirty and there is rubbish dumped at the side of the street in the foreground. There is a lamp post on the pavement next to the entrance to the court in the foreground.
    5. Design to convert court houses into tenements in flats.jpg
    6. Demonstrates just how closely built the courts were.jpg
    7. Croston Court Hockenhall Alley.jpg Watercolour 1886.
    8. 1 to 6 IN 12 Court Johnson Street.jpg A view of a court with three-storey terraced houses to three sides. A mangle stands to the left of the door on the left, where two women stand with dirty washing hanging on a line above them. In the rear of the court a woman holds a child in another doorway, while other children play at her feet. A young man stands to the right, looking at the camera. The buildings have been distempered to first storey level, although damp is starting to seep through. In the immediate centre foreground a communal water pump can be seen, with a central gutter set into the flagstone floor of the yard.
    9. OS 120 map showing part of Eldon Street 1891.jpg The section shows courts 2 and 4 which were demolished to make way for Brodie's concrete flats.

Great pic's Kev, but any idea what the P.H.stands for,on the corner opposite the"Glasshous" pub? (pic' 9) I'm guessing it means Public House, but what was it called?( Even Ged was flummoxed!)

I dont know for sure but Public House seems to be the best answer as they are on corners.

Great images Kev, thanks for posting.

One question - the Croston Court/ Hockinghall Alley painting [copied below] shows a series of fisherman's cottages.

Edit: Image omitted. Sorry guys, this was the wrong cottage identified, so removed to save confusion.

Public House [P.H.] explained on OS maps:

On large scale Ordnance survey maps, say 32 inches to the mile, the names of pubs are actually featured. For example, one building on Dale Street is listed as "The Mitre Inn". Zooming out and looking at the same building on a smaller scale 15 inches to the mile map, it just lists it as "P.H."

    Please can anyone help?
i am trying to find the location of Gough Court, i had family who where listed as living there in on the 1881 Census,
The district is Toxteth Park, so i have been looking on the old toxteth net website, but it isn't listed on the street finder,

    Thanks

If you see the original handwritten entry, it should show adjoining streets.

Great illustrations, especially Hockenhall Alley, but it should be said that not all properties with 'Court' in the name were what we now call 'court dwellings'.
Croston Court seem quite large houses.
Hockenhall Alley at that point is quite wide for an 'alley'.
    (I was there yesterday.)

The Liverpool Record Office at the Central Library.
If you know the number of that page you could look at the ones before and after it, and follow the Enumerator as he did his walk.
Holy Trinity Church was in Parliament Street.

    Hi, thanks for this,
i have looked at all the census, from 1841 to 1911,
the only one where i can find Goughs court is on the 1871,
on the other census the courts on Parliment street are numbered?
i found a shepherd family death registered in 1873 at court 4 parlament street do you think this may be the same place?

    It could be.
Liverpool Record Office have the large scale (1/500) 1890 map which will probably give the court a name.
As you've found out, they were also given numbers.
