Default Anyone remember Hartleys Jam Factory?

I remeber it well, having spent a good few childhood days pinching jars of freshly made stawberry jam!....The building was camouflaged and there was a fantastic clock-tower which got knocked down. The smell from the place on hot summer days was fantastic. If the wind was right you could smell the jam up on Marsh Lane in Bootle!
If anyone has any photo's of the clock-tower I'd be gratefull for a copy...Only for private nostalgic use that is!..I've only been able to find one black and white image which isn't too clear so far!

I remember it Zap. We lived in Cedar Road for many years and as we came out of our door we could see the Factory down the road, across St Bonaventure School field.I also attended the School so the Factory was an important landmark to me. The Hartleys were a famous Quaker family and The Christina Hartley hospital in Southport was funded by the family. Hartleys Village remains an important example of social housing for employees at a time when the workforce was expendable . Like other famous Quaker families, like the Terrys of York chocalatiers, their religious beliefs obliged them to have an involvement in the social welfare of their staff. Its strange that so many people still dont know the village exists, hidden as it is, off Long Lane. A lot of people from Fazakerely, where I hail from, were employed by Hartleys. They were always full of burns, presumably from the hot jam. Sad to see it looking so shabby nowadays. Still some fine brickwork and ornamental features on it. I presume its listed.

Didn't they have a running track in the sports ground? I remember Sefton Harriers having their athletics championships there in the early 1970s. Not that I won anything!

Yes there was a sports field and tennis courts by Hartleys Hill on " The Rec " as we called it ! There were also one or two fishing ponds at the back of the factory for employees recreational use! I think they used to stage competitions there!

There is still two ponds but these belong to Jacobs. Rice Lane "Rec" is still there.

There's this from the LRO, maybe the one you have already

A photograph of the Hartleys Preserves factory, which is a large building. Lower down from the factory on the other side of the road is a field, which has a number of caravans in it. These are presumably gypsy caravans. There are a number of people, cars and a motorcycle and side car on
    the road.

Another from the LRO of that area...

A photograph looking down Long Lane. On the left is a large building which is the premises of P. William Hartley Ltd., preserve manufacturers. Further down the road there is a bridge, which a motor car is crossing. People are walking past the factory.

the 2nd one from the LRO says...

An aerial photograph of Long Lane. There are numberous buildings in the photograph and long Lane and other roads and landmarks have been marked out, such as Stop Gate Lane, Cheshire Lines Railway, Hartley's Jam Works, Jacob's Biscuit Factory, and at the edge, Walton Hall Park. There are also open fields and land in the vicinity.

    Thanks hmtmaj

I have the first photo because it shows the clock-tower...There MUST be others knocking about somewhere...We could see the clock-tower and the factory chimney from our back yard in Devonfield road!

I would love to know what happened to the clock, it was my mother in law on granada reports fighting to stop its removal.
the villagers are united at present and are working with the city council to obtain it as a conservation area and stop its continuing decline.
sure if you google on You tube there is a film of the street party we had last year. we are collecting historical stories because everyones family members worker in hartleys.
keep in touch and check out their web site, there are many pictures of the buildings, village. even plans of original lay out of the village.
