    Liverpool Waters web site updated:
    Liverpool Waters

No rapid-transit Merseyrail station. Are we to take this serious? I do not.

Of course West Waterloo Dock is being filled in - Land by Stealth.

I like it, gotta be better than what's there which will remain like that for the rest of our life time if these plans don't get the go ahead. At least it's a more realistic proposition than what they originally proposed.

It needs vibrant communities around the waters. No silly large soul destroying arena or staium or whatever - the only thing like that we should have is a new Phil/opera house on the docks.

It will not work unless rapid-transit rail run in initially as the catalyst, as in London's Docklands - not ding, ding trams.

    Peel are:

    • Proposing to fill-in water spaces.
    • NO rapid-transit Merseyrail station

It will not work - well not as they think. It will be a collection of cheap tatty buildings. A wasted opportunity.

Peel are not running rapid-transit rail into Wirral Waters. Yet is is simple and easy to do.

On the surface it appears the Birkenhead Dock Branch Line appears impractical as it runs south in a deep cutting from the docks to Rock Ferry and only accessed via the south. However, the tunnel directly south of Birkenhead Central station running around the gas holders can be branched into and curved into the Birkenhead Dock Branch Line. This would be a very short section of new tunnel. Or a cutting through the demolished Mollington Street train maintenance depot. Light-rail trains can be used to reduce the arc of the U line. Merseyrail trains from Liverpool would run through Hamilton Square, Birkenhead Central and then do a U-turn and turn north onto the Birkenhead Dock Branch Line and onto Wirral Waters. A station could be built in the cutting at a suitable point if need be.

In the picture below, the green is Birkenhead Central station. The yellow line is the existing Merseyrail Wirral Line to Chester and Ellesmere Port. The red is a new line running along the Birkenhead Dock Branch cutting to Wirral Waters from Birkenhead Central station and from Chester in the south. This gives essential rapid-transit access to Liverpool city centre and Liverpool John Lennon Airport.

Birkenhead Dock Branch Line Cutting Ideal for Tunnel Conversion
The Birkenhead Dock Branch Line cuts right through Birkenhead centre. Such a deep cutting is a hindrance through a town centre. Precast concrete arches can be used to cover the line creating a 4 track wide tunnel. Provision for a station could be created in the tunnel for future use. The whole cutting can be backfilled using the now massive trench as a lucrative landfill site. The resulting land may be sold off and developments built upon. Then Birkenhead is rid of a deep ugly gorge through its centre, and the profit from Landfill and land creation set against the cost of re-instating the line.

Me thinks they are not serious at all. Put the station at Wirral Waters and they will come.

Having looked through the images for this project I am pretty much convinced this will be a huge leap forward for Liverpool. Ofcourse there some finer details to be worked out such as transport but on the whole I am for this project. The one huge concern I have is this rediculous New World Square proposal. This project will be hugely detrimental to our world heritage waterfront and as you can see from some of the images this building will completely obscure the view of our three most important buildings.
I don't know what this obsession is with building right on top of these buildings but it has to stop. I am still hugely sceptical about Mann Island, building new world square has to be stopped. This area should simply be opened up as a public space, Liverpool has acres of land all over the city for people to use without objection.
I did hear recently that there are problems with the finance for this project and to be honest I am happy to hear it! If anyone has any further info on this or a website I can visit please let me know.

A netto would cost less and I might just use that. Im going off the city centre very fast, it bores me to go there now, I would rather go to Huyton or Prescot than look at those horrible buildings.

I love the city centre now. We hung around there in the 70s - dropping bricks into the Albert dock sludge, larking around South castle st bombdies and the bridge over James st and around Wilberforce house and the bucket fountain. So much better now and tourists everywhere photographing and videoing.

Waterways, I am looking at renders of Liverpool waters on another forum (you know which) and there are trams/trains of some description depicted?

On the LW site they have a picture of a very ugly tram. Yep the multi-nationals will locate from NY in a jiffy looking at that.

Peel should look into building an artificial island with a causeway to it just off Liverpool Waters and build their Shanghai Tower.

If they had any brains they would widen the West Waterloo Dock river locks, and deepen the dock to allow Cruise liners to dock to start and finish cruises. That would be cheaper than building a new floating landing stage.

Spike it is people like you, and your attitude, that were the decline of Liverpool. People like me had to leave, along with half of the city. Maybe we should all go back and the likes of you leave.

So you do not like it. Big deal. Stop cluttering the thread and leave it posts that add value.

You are and and you said it. You said you didn't like it. We got it. You never gave any reasoning why, apart from it being new. I have reservations on two points which I gave: No Merseyrail rapid-transit rail (it will not work without this) and they are filling in water spaces again. I extended on those points as well giving examples of successful similar projects.

You say you just don't like it. Great you only need to say it once, we got the message. You are adding no value to the thread whatsoever and adding clutter, so but out.
