Postboxes

Post your Liverpool postboxes here. Sounds a bit trainspotterish, but I'm fascinated with them. You can guess

their age by the ubiquitous "ER" and "GR" insignias on the front of them.

My first pic is the oldest postbox in Liverpool. It used to be located on

Sheil Rd, but can now be found in the grounds of the Royal Mail building near Limey. The second one is a Victorian postbox in Wood

Don't know if it's still there but

there was a Victorian one in Arundel Avenue, near Sydenham Avenue.

The country's only octagonal post box was at the corner of Mill St and Northumberland St. It was there until the 1970s and taken away as it

was so unique. I saw a photo of it on the net somewhere.

There are other multisided Victorian postboxes around elsewhere. Do they have eight sides as well?

I've heard 3 or 4 different places where the oldest postbox is meant to be.
Scouserdave says Sheil rd. Ayjaykay says Chatham.

I was always told that the oldest was originally sited in Everton, can't remember which rd - somewhere like Everton Brow or Netherfield.
Anyway, somewhere near by.

Can anyone clear this up ?

It depends on whether you mean the oldest one still in its original position or not.
Besides, they don't have dates on them so it would be hard to tell.

I'm convinced (but not looked in ages) that there is still one in the wall on Woolton Road, Childwall. This was the boundary wall to Childwall C of E School (my primary school) and it was positioned in the wall. Now it's someone's back garden so it wouldn't take much to get a blow torch and cut the back open

I've seen an old one at the Albert Dock, near the wacker qwackers.

MEET HEAVY AND SPECIAL POSTING REQUIREMENTS
FOUND IN CERTAIN PARTS OF THIS CITY. IT DIFFERED
FROM THE STANDARD BY THE INCLUSION OF THE
LETTERING "POST OFFICE" BELOW THE POSTING
APERTURE AND A LARGE CROWN ON THE ROOF.
A MAIL BAG COULD ALSO BE HUNG INSIDE.

AFTER 115 YEARS OF CONTINUOUS USE IN THE
EVERTON DISTRICT, THIS POSTING BOX WAS WITHDRAWN
FROM SERVICE IN SEPTEMBER 1978 AND PRESERVED AS A
FINE EXAMPLE OF EARLY VICTORIAN STREET FURNITURE.

The one I mentioned in Chatham Street was listed in 1975, along with the one in Sheil Road.
