    Wow, camera phones

are getting pretty good these days! Nice photos... never been there myself, although my brother has a knack of managing to talk his way into the jockey and

members enclosures wherever he goes to watch the racing... don't know how he does it...

    Equestrian centre officially open

Clare Balding unveiled a commemorative plaque

The new £4.6m Aintree International Equestrian Centre has been officially opened in Merseyside by BBC sports presenter Clare Balding.

She unveiled a commemorative plaque to mark the opening.

Aintree features a main arena - suitable for hosting equestrian competitions - as well as a collecting ring, offices and lecture rooms.

Up to 4,000 spectators can be accommodated for events in the centre, which was completed in April.

    'Exciting addition'

The Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA) and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) helped to fund the centre which is located in the grounds of Aintree Racecourse.

Steven Broomhead, Chief Executive of the NWDA, said: "Aintree Racecourse is one of the North West's major tourism assets, attracting 200,000 visitors to the region every year.

"The new International Equestrian Centre is an exciting addition to this venue, as there is nothing else like it in the region.

"The Agency's investment means that this facility is capable of attracting international events to the Northwest, making a significant contribution to the regional economy."
