    Default Spike Milligan Poetry

Whats your favourite from the Man himself?

I shall start with this very apt one for this time of year.

    CHRISTMAS 1970

A little girl called Sile Javotte
Said " look at the lovely presents I've got "
While a little girl in Biafra said
" Oh, what a lovely slice of Bread "

    Granny

Through every nook and every cranny
The wind blew in on poor old Granny
Around her knees, into each ear
(And up nose as well, I fear)

All through the night the wind grew worse
It nearly made the vicar curse
The top had fallen off the steeple
Just missing him (and other people)

It blew on man, it blew on beast
It blew on nun, it blew on priest
It blew the wig off Auntie Fanny-
But most of all, it blew on Granny!

I like this one but you could have fun moving the words granny, cranny and fanny about if you know what I mean

    RAIN

"There are holes in the sky,
    Where the rain gets in.
    They're not very large,
    So the rain is thin."

I must go down to the sea again
    The lonely sea and sky
I left my vest and pants there
Do you think they will be dry?

Things that go bump in the night
Should not really give one a fright
It's the hole in each ear that lets in the fear
That, and the absence of light.

    TEETH

    English Teeth, English Teeth!
    Shining in the sun
    A part of British heritage
    Aye, each and every one.
    English Teeth, Happy Teeth!
    Always having fun
Clamping down on bits of fish
    And sausages half done.
    English Teeth! HEROES' Teeth!
    Hear them click! and clack!
Let's sing a song of praise to them -
Three Cheers for the Brown Grey and Black.

    On the Ning Nang Nong
    Where the Cows go Bong!
and the monkeys all say BOO!
    There's a Nong Nang Ning
    Where the trees go Ping!
And the tea pots jibber jabber joo.
    On the Nong Ning Nang
    All the mice go Clang
And you just can't catch 'em when they do!
    So its Ning Nang Nong
    Cows go Bong!
    Nong Nang Ning
    Trees go ping
    Nong Ning Nang
    The mice go Clang
What a noisy place to belong
is the Ning Nang Ning Nang Nong!!

    A Silly Poem

    Said Hamlet to Ophelia,
I'll draw a sketch of thee,
What kind of pencil shall I use?
    2B or not 2B?

This one means a lot to me as my Grandad was killed at Lauro in Italy during WW2. This is near where Spike recieved his wounds and suffered the shell-shock which affected him for the rest of his life.

    The Soldiers at Lauro

    Young are our dead
    Like babies they lie
    The wombs they blest once
    Not healed dry
    And yet - too soon
    Into each space
    A cold earth falls
    On colder face.
    Quite still they lie
    These fresh-cut reeds
    Clutched in earth
    Like winter seeds
    But they will not bloom
    When called by spring
    To burst with leaf
    And blossoming
    They sleep on
    In silent dust
    As crosses rot
    And helmets rust.

Very fine, Spike. Thanks for posting this. I find it to be a fine and evocative poem that well demonstrates that the man had a serious side.

It is every little girl's dream to be
The fairy on a Christmas tree.
    A wand in her hand,
    A smile on her face.
And a tree in a most peculiar place.
