Even before Christmas, was Christmas - the 21st Dec, the winter soltice [the shortest day, with least amount of daylight] was dreaded by human civilisation. If anything, this was the eve of the natural new year's cycle. If anything bad was going to happen in the year, this was this going to be on this day. Even now, movies such as 2012 foresee the end of time [according to the Mayan calender] as being 21st Dec. 2012 and plays homage to this ancient [and in some parts of the US: recent] fear of the end of days, or some kind of Apocalypse.
Hence, the burning of lights long into to the night so see off all these evil spirits is now masked by the current celebration.
So Christmas, was not always a time of Cheer! It was a time of Fear!
