    Default Harold Ackroyd has died.

The author of "Dream Palaces of Liverpool"; "Southport Stage and Screen", and "Liverpool Theatres" has died.
I think he would have approved of his death being reported in this thread.
    R.I.P. Mr Ackroyd.

I second that, Ged. "Dream Palaces of Liverpool" is one of my favourite books
You take them for granted - until one day they're gone!

    Park Palace:
The name was getting fitted today. I'm sure it re-opens this evening (as a theatre).

A Biennial artwork road-sign has appeared again outside The Futurist.

Talking of pre-1930's cinemas - has anybody ever traced photos of the pre-
30's Queens and Victory on County Road. And do they still exist as cinemas?

Many thanks Mandy - I'm not really surprised. It looked to be in need of a
hefty refurbishment even to my 10 year old eyes in 1930. But it used to be
the highlight of my young life every Saturday afternoon! Tom Mix, Hoot Gibson,
the early Hal Roach comedies, and of course Betty Boop, Pop-eye the Sailor
and the rest. Do you know whether it was the Germans who did for it or just
the march of Time? The Victory as I remember was rather a cut above but it
would surprise me if it turns out to be still going. How about the 3 upmarket
ones of those days - the Astoria,Princess and Commodore, which were my
teenage glamour providers - have they all gone too? Has anybody produced
any info on those, do you know? Thanks anyhow for your help. Stan H.

We'll never see the likes of cinemas like that again.
What's this about the Astoria? Am I to understand that it's gone? And,if so, how and when? I've just been told that the Queens is no longer on County Road. Are
there any cinemas left in Kirkdale? Stan H.

The Astoria is no more. I went to the Victory in the late 1950's, but it had disappeared by the 1970's. Don't remember the Queens. The Princess turned into a bingo hall in the 1970's. I believe they have now demolished the Bedford in Bedford Road. What a shame.

There is a good book available with all the old picture houses, including histories and pictures. Can't remember who the author is.

Hello there. Will there be any photos of old Kirkdale cinemas? I've only just
started researching this area but am rapidly getting the impression that it's
a forlorn enterprise. Particularly as they all seem to have disappeared into
    limbo! Stan H.

I've been taking photos of Liverpool's cinemas since 1982.
Both the Queens and the Victory had already been demolished.
The Queens went about 1980, and part of a side wall remained in 1982.
The Victory was demolished soon after it closed in 1961.
Harold Ackroyd's book has one photo of each, but the one of the Queens is rather poor, and only the entrance to the Victory is shown.
The Astoria was demolished a few years.
The Commodore and Princess are still standing, although there are plans to demolish the Princess.
    The Grosvenor is still standing.
There are photos of the last four in my Flickr page.
    Look in my "Sets".
There's also a photo of the Queen's when it was a supermarket.
    That's in K G Rose's set.
