Thumbs up Liverpool - Wales and Youth Hostels

Liverpool was the birthplace of the English Youth hostels following a meeting in 1929 and a trip to Germany by a Liverpool contingent to study their hostels.

The first Youth Hostel was in the Snowdon Area, and one of the founders was my Aunt Connie - the E.C. Alexander in the attached newspaper clip.

She also wrote a 1948 booklet "The Snowdon Log" about hiking in Snowdonia - the publisher listed in the front is the "Merseyside Youth Hostels, Ltd."

I assume the newspaper clip is c. 1989/1990 based on the talk of a 60th anniversary. Aunt Connie had passed away by then, but she did go the the 50th anniversary of the Idwal hostel

...and the 50th celebration - she married a welshman "Uncle Taffy" - and became Connie Williams. They had a house with a beautiful view on the Little Orme in Llanduno.

So the English Youth Hostel Association was essentially started by a group of Liverpudlians who liked to hike in North Wales....
