    I believe the university knocked down the last remaining part of the workhouse a few years ago to build that goldfish bowl. I think it was the admittance house? i could be wrong? i am most of the time . but if true what a sad thing to do, such history.

    You want MORE? More boy? MORE?

    This website is an absolute mine of information;

    www.workhouses.org.uk - The Workhouse Web Site

    Loads on the Select Vestry (pre-1834 Poor Law commission) and the Brownlow Hill Workhouse as well as the Toxteth and West Derby Work Houses.

    Nice one fortinian thanks mate.

    I shall have a read through that. A lot of my ancestors where in the workhouse, i have found some very sad stories about them in the records office.

    One nice one is about two of the lads from my OWENS side. aged 12 and 9 the brothers where admitted to Brownlow hill workhouse, i was saddened to read their names in the admittance book, but laughed when it stated that they ran away the next day. They both turn up on later census returns with families, so i wise decision by them.

    There's still a trace there. If you look alongside the Cathedral, opposite the University and also further down Brownlow Hill, you'll see a small brick wall, only about 5 bricks high. That marks the old boundaries of the workhouse.

    That's interesting. I didn't know that. I'll make a point of looking.
    Thanks for that info.
