I just got a copy of my grandfathers crew records "Continuous Certificates of Discharge"
His records start off as Second Mate (at age 23 in 1917), and his last voyage was as Chief Officer in 1936, when the depression cut short his sailing career and he become a Supervisor at one of the Liverpool Docks.
The first record in the book is interesting -- "Vessel Sunk", and goes along with a notation in the front that states this is a re-issued book.
The ship was the SS Ferrona, and apparently U-64 was responsible --
He was mainly on the "Clemenceau" 1919-1929, the "Kumasian" 1934-1935, and the "Dahomian" 1936-1936 - mostly sailing to West Africa.
I believe all of the ships were Liverpool based - and a bit of web searching found they were the "Palm Line" and owned by Unilever. The same ones I could see in the Mersey with a Palm Tree on the funnel - I think --
