    Thanks az,

Bit of trivia - did you notice that the new housing over the Herculaneum dock has a water feature roughly the same profile as the previous graving dock.

It is a bit North of the Festival Site.

Herculanium was the most Southern dock - neat MD&HB map here -

So, was it the dump, or just undeveloped land before the festival?
It was a dump before the Garden Festival

Ahhh the Festival Hall is in the old sat photo

The whole site should have been transformed in to an Eden type project with the Oriental Gardens... never mind eh... at least we are getting some gardens back ...

It was a dump and butane gas release from the land was the reason, was it not, why housing couldn't be built on it once before?

    It's actually methane gas,Ged,from rotting garbage! There's a small plant,on the promenade,that extracts,and uses this, to power??

Yes that's it methane. So it was a tip then. I don't remember it from back then. I know the Dingle oil jetty was a little further north too.

Most of that prom' was built on rubbish/landfill,and opened officially,in 1950. It's changed quite dramatically over the years! Here's a few pic's that include the lord mayor,at the opening ceremony.

All pic's courtesy of L.R.O.and others unknown!

Yes... interesting what the satellite pics show, isn't it?

That's how I spotted the old dock entrance - I guess it was too much concrete to remove...

Yes... but those pics are of the Otterspool Prom.

In the 60's I sort of remember it stopping before Jericho Lane (South of the Festival Site)

Was I wrong? Did the prom originally go that far North? I though that area was the active dump in the 60s...

I'm not sure of exact locations, but the prom more or less,go's as far as Garston docks! All I know is that area, was infilled with city garbage, for years! You can see the difference in land levels,as you walk along, especially at the grounds of a now demolished mansion, (which, apparently, was the home of Jeremiah Horrocks, astronomer royal!) where the path is now higher than the railings of the house! There is still a recycling centre, at the bottom of Jericho lane.

That's the South end... I was talking about the North end...

It almost reaches Garston Docks as you say, but the last little bits in private Grassendale Park and Cressington Park do not connect to the rest.
They never did connect (officially) - I vaguely remember sneaking through at low tide..

The present recycling center is in-between the present prom and the festival site.

    Re: Herculaneum Dock
There were rumours for years, that part of the infill contained Anthrax. This was also reported in the Liverpool Echo a couple of times.
I can only find this article via Google:

Mmm, an accident waiting to happen? It's mystifying, how casually these decisions are made!

Fancy a parkland walk with the family or a flat above some Anthrax??? Yes please.
