Nothing to worry about - they will be futuristic luxury apartments built on stilts and they won't be having gardens, so it can't be in the least bit dangerous! At the time of the Festival Gardens there was a methane gas recovery plant constantly in operation, but that was a long time ago and most of the two million tons of rubbish will have completely broken down harmlessly by now... Won't it?

Isn't the methane plant still running?

And I've no idea about the safety, not my forte. Can't be good tho, eh?

A lot of the infill was removed to other places during the development for the IGF.
One of the conditions prior to building apartments, was for a survey to be carried out. The site was declared to be 'safe' and City Quay built.

City Quay area perhaps, but I was referring to the larger area running up towards Otterspool, which is about to be developed.

There were rumours for years, that part of the infill contained Anthrax. This was also reported in the Liverpool Echo a couple of times.
I can only find this article via Google:
    New Scientist 20 October 1983

Expect Al Queda to start bulk buying those flats soon.

I didn't realise that not all the festival site was reclaimed land, some of it rose up over what was the Dingle fields.

Some great phots on the Liverpool Echo site, showing all the work going on... the Japanese garden looks fab so far

    http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/liver...0252-26560693/

    I'm horrified by this though

Mr Swift said: “We found one guy, with his kids, holding an axe and having a go at chopping a pavilion down.

“We stopped a few people in the act as well making a few attempts at burning the pavilion down.”

Great selection empeebee thanks. I haven't read through all of this thread but presumbably the intention is to reopen the site to the public again?

As I understand it, the interest of the developers was to create a congenial environment for residents rather than the general public, but concessions have been fought for and won, and the refurbished gardens - which will only be a part of the original site - will be a public park.
