She sank U-224 by ramming, after bringing her to the surface with depth charges. This was in the Western Med, near Algiers, and the lone survivor was 1st Lt Wolf Dietrich Dankworth (no relation to recently deceased Johnny)

Forgot to mention - this was on 13 January, 1943.

We British love stories of the little man overcoming adversity against all the odds. The war artist Charles Pears ,tells such a story in this painting. It shows an old trawler of the Royal Navy Reserve ,it shows a boat pulling off from the trawler attempting to get the U-Boats code books. No legend accompanies the painting, was it artistic licence ,or did one such an encounter take place?

Norman Wilkinson painted an escort pair that have forced a U-Boat to surface with depth charges. The angle of the U-boats bow suggests that it will sink back again without the crew escaping.

This is a piece of commercial art by Charles Dixon;painted in 1916 ,it shows Britains naval might and how it thrives on beef tea! A wonderful bit of whimsy,

In September 1955, these two Australian warships escorted us, on the `GEORGIC`, with 2500 Australian troops on board, from Sydney to Penang, Malaya for the war against the Communists.
Leaving Sydney Harbour I had the unusual experience of holding an Australian Soldier in my arms while he sobbed on my shoulder. He said he wouldnt be coming back, he knew he would be killed. He had served in the Korean war and obviously survived. I met another soldier two years later in Brisbane and he told me they had a few of them killed. I often wondered if that lad was one of them.

The American war artist Anton Otto Fischer painted this scene from the deck of an American Coast Guard cutter which was on convoy escort. He expresses the tedium of keeping a constant look out for ever present danger of U-Boats. A classic picture,

WHEN WE WERE CARRYING THE 2500 AUSTRALIAN TROOPS FROM SYDNEY TO PENANG WITH RAN SHIPS WE ALSO HAD AN AIR ESCORT OF RAAF BOMBERS ON AND OFF ALONG THE NORTH QUEENSLAND COAST UNTIL WE GOT INTO iNDONESIAN WATERS.

Two pictures, same subject, the attack on Pearl Harbour. The first is by an unknown artist and is from the US Army Center of Military History. It shows the Arizona exploding and about to capsize.
The second painting is by the Japanese war arist Arai Shori and it shows the pilots intheir cockpits awaiting the signal to take of and attack Pearl Harbour. The pilots carried just enough fuel to reach target and return to their carrier, they usually landed with near empty tanks,

Two pictures were painted around the same time, the first is by the Canadian war artist Tom Wood and shows night action between Canadian and German destroyers in the English Channel. The artist has been able to convey the stress and urgency of the men aboard the Canadian ship, something a photograph could never do.
Thew second picture is by the great British marine artist Norman Wilkinson and shows the HMS Campbell Town,a world War 1 four piper transferred to the Rotal Navy under the destroyers for bases deal, leading the attack to destroy the massive dry dock and submarine berths at St. Nazaire. The Campbelltown had been cleaned out below decks forward and 5 tons of explosives werew concreted into her hull. She would drive at flank speed into the gates of the great drydock and a time charge would blow up hull and dock gates. Heroic !
