    pablo42,

Is it anarchy to have a say in how your Government operates?

Can bringing power back into the hands of the people a bad thing?

Is this, the system we have at present, the best we can do?

Can any idea that allows the people to connect with Politics be worse than what we have today?

Surely now is the time for the people to give the Party Politicians their just deserts and NOT reward them for something where their reward comes first?

Why should we be more affraid of doing things by ourselves for ourselves than letting strangers do as they please for their own benefit?

I know fine well that I am talking to Liverpudlians and as such will hear much that is not exactly what I may wish to hear.

Nevertheless, all too soon the General Election shall be upon us.

Before we vote it may be the habit already to think things over first.

Those who are happy with things as they are may find themselves in the minority and choices should be made.

Let us not forget that Democracy is about people, and people power. We get but one chance to change things every five years. We are all a long time dead.

A lot of people vote tactically to keep a party out. Many vote Lib when they are Lab to keep the Tories out. People should vote even a party that has no hope. When the total figures come out then that will force change in the minimalist democracy we have. Look at the total percentage of votes the Libs get - then look at the seats they get in parliament.

Those who are contemptuous of democracy would be better to visit parts of the world where it does not exist. Then they will soon vote.

In my experience those who do not vote are the biggest whiners when they see something which they do not like or goes against them in some way.

    My reponse is this...

    1. Play them at their own game.
[this is what they want (see above) Whichever party wins the majority in the Commons the other will get about half the seats in the Commons.
    2. Don't play the game.
[this is how the non-voters and the spoiler groups (NOTA, Loonies etc.) go about it. Are they being 'positive' by being negative?]
    3. Play their game WITHOUT them.
This is my way. This is a positive way. This is a Democratic way. This is one sure way of getting progress.
Power in the hands of the people I hear you say. Many have said this including Thatcher - although she never gave any.

Power to the people can be viewed as reduced official control.

    1. Implement Land Value Tax (LVT) - no income tax for no tax on your labours.
    2. Free up the land for people to use - only 7.5% is settled.
    3. Free up the planning system.

Well what does all that mean? Well people are more in control of their own affairs and less affected by political decisions. Politicians should guide not control. The system we live by should be self-regulating as much as possible.

That cascades into bigger better cheaper homes - housing is a major problem in the UK, a problem that need not exist. The basics of life are then cheap - quality, sizeable shelter. The quality of life is improved as a vast chunk of a persons income is not just to put a small roof over their heads. A more even spread of the proceeds of a society's production. Economic justice.

    Further explanations:
    What is LVT
How Land Affects the Average Person

    wsteve55,
And who do you think is going to give you this?
I hazzard to guess that those who prefer the status-quo will not be at the head of the line.
    But, the choice is yours.

    Default Thought for today.

If all contacted their Council Office to insist their names be on the electoral role may be you would see more of your prospective candidates. Show that you matter no matter what.

I think the choice of who will Govern will be made easier when this godawful and hated Prime Minister falls on his sword. He is a very unpopular man (even more so today after his letter gaffe). Anyway, lets see what happens after the Glasgow North East by election this thursday. It could be "D" day for Brown. They will not win with him as leader so they need to wake up and smell the coffee on friday morning. I just hope they don't and carry on cruising towards oblivion.

If we are to move forward there could be no worse place to begin from that here. We are faced with no more than varying shades of Blue.
In one of my moments of weakness I dreamed this up as a platform for Democratic progress. I have from now 'till the next election to make this happen.

    Day ONE.

    Item 1.
Date of next election + that such election will NOT be under FPTP
    Item 2.
Downward reappraisal of Salary and benefits of upper echelon of those paid by the public purse.
    Item 3.
Immediate abolition of The House of Lords.
    Item 4.
All bonuses to be taxed in excess of %100.
    Item 5.
    Banking split;hight street, other.

[P.S. I am sorely tempted to apply the Gaming Act (2005) to ALL who profit by speculation]

    I feel better.

    Thank you for that.

Is it not funny, in a not so funny kind of way, that each of the candidates for PM are strong on getting us all ready to pay through the nose for the short-comings of the last Parliament...and yet they offer little or nothing in exchange.
Yes, I think we--the--people need pay-back, hence my mentioning of the immediate abolishion of the House of Lords. The least wtp should expect is to get more of a true Democracy out of this mess. Little hope of that thus far.
