I can be thick at times.

As he died here he comes under England and Wales deaths. dont matter that he was in service at the time.

Here are his details age 49 Carlisle 10b 707

    April/May/June 1917 Quater.

Does not include his middle name but this is him for sure.

Can find nothing on the births for him? SDGW list him as born in Liverpool.

Was his mother called Thompson? is that a double surname do you think?

I have a letter written by my Nans brother George James Williams in December 1916, he was based at Aldershot waiting to be shipped out to France, it is very sad and it is clear he is very unhappy, sadly he died in Flanders on the 21st of February 1917.
Is this something you would be interested in ?, I also have stories about my Dad who was in the Merchant Navy, my Uncle in the Royal Navy, My Mum who when there was an air raid always ran into the Mission in the Dingle as she hated the shelters, also my Aunty was in Toxteth Park cemetary when the siren went off and refused to go into a shelter as it was in the cemetary and she said "you never know who else is down there dead or alive!.

Thanks for looking for me Tony

his mother was Isabella Thompson but I don't think it was a double surname as his childrens surnames were just Reay
his father was Matthew Dunn Reay

Robbo, I thought you would be interested in the following information,

The Royal Defence Corps was a corps of the British Army formed in August 1917 and disbanded in 1936.

It was initially formed by converting the (Home Service) Garrison battalions of line infantry regiments. Garrison battalions were composed of soldiers either too old or medically unfit for active front-line service; the Home Service status indicated they were unable to be transferred overseas. Eighteen battalions were converted in this way[1].

The role of the regiment was to provide troops for security and guard duties inside the United Kingdom; guarding important locations such as ports or bridges. It also provided independent companies for guarding prisoner-of-war camps. The regiment was never intended to be employed on overseas service.

Looks A great site spike, will follow with interest,
Dad seved in WW2, he passed away a few years back,I wonder if all the people who served in the wars enjoy talking about their experiences,my Dad loved to watch the war time history programs i video taped for him off Sky but he never opened up about the war to me ,i had to ask questions to get a small bit of info,He told me he was a guard in a POW camp near Formby for a while and became good friends with a prisoner,Italian i think,he then landed D-DAY +5 which moved north into Belgium and Holland.he told me of meeting the dutch resistance and the awful conditions they endured, dont think he was covered by official secrets act but didnt enjoy talking about the war.
