Queensway tunnel now open - for regular tours

VISITORS will be able to delve into the inner workings of the famous Mersey Tunnels

with the launch of new weekly guided tours.

They will be able to go underneath the tunnel road surface, see Merseytravel’s newly-constructed escape

refuges and watch one of the six ventilation stations of the Queensway tunnel in action.

They will also be given access to the engineering control

    room.

Cllr Mark Dowd, chair of Merseytravel, said: “The tours will tell of the history and inner workings of the tunnels, which are fascinating. The

tunnels are a great feat of engineering and these tours will allow people into the heart of the tunnel itself.”

    Neil Scales, chief executive and

director general of Merseytravel, added: “The tours are part of our commitment to making the tunnels more accessible to many more people.” Queens- way,

linking Liverpool with Birkenhead, was the world’s biggest road tunnel when finished in 1934, and hailed as one of the great engineering achievements of the

    20th century.

Its distinctive look was created by the Liverpool-born architect Herbert Rowse, who was also responsible for some of the city’s greatest

    edifices, such as India Buildings.

The tours – at £3 per head – will begin from the Georges Dock Building on The Strand, in Liverpool, at 5.30pm

    every Thursday. To book a place, contact 0151 236 8602, ext 206.

    And the Philharmonic Hall.
Room was made under the Tunnel roadway for Trams, but it was never used.

Queensway tunnel now open - for regular tours

VISITORS will be able to delve into the inner workings of the famous Mersey Tunnels with the launch of new weekly guided tours.

They will be able to go underneath the tunnel road surface, see Merseytravel’s newly-constructed escape refuges and watch one of the six ventilation stations of the Queensway tunnel in action.

They will also be given access to the engineering control room.

Cllr Mark Dowd, chair of Merseytravel, said: “The tours will tell of the history and inner workings of the tunnels, which are fascinating. The tunnels are a great feat of engineering and these tours will allow people into the heart of the tunnel itself.”

Neil Scales, chief executive and director general of Merseytravel, added: “The tours are part of our commitment to making the tunnels more accessible to many more people.” Queens- way, linking Liverpool with Birkenhead, was the world’s biggest road tunnel when finished in 1934, and hailed as one of the great engineering achievements of the 20th century.

Its distinctive look was created by the Liverpool-born architect Herbert Rowse, who was also responsible for some of the city’s greatest edifices, such as India Buildings.

The tours – at £3 per head – will begin from the Georges Dock Building on The Strand, in Liverpool, at 5.30pm every Thursday. To book a place, contact 0151 236 8602, ext 206.
