PEOPLE in south Liverpool are being urged to rally round to help Woolton Village win a national award.

After a five-year run of success in the North West in Bloom competition, Woolton village has been selected to represent the region in this summer's national competition, Britain In Bloom.

The village will be competing against nine others in the large village category.

Organisers Woolton In Bloom are aiming for the coveted silver award, but say the community needs to pull together to make it happen.

Cllr Barbara Collinge, one of the leaders of Woolton In Bloom, said: "When we started entering North West in Bloom in 2001 we wanted to bring the community together after a debate over a traffic scheme caused divisions.

"We've been very successful in competing against some of the prettiest chocolate box villages in the country who don't have the same problems an urban village has with things like graffiti.

"The prospect of watering 70 hanging baskets around the village is quite daunting, and we really need more people to come and help."
