Here are yet more of the articles that JtR Forums site owner Howard Brown has been posting in a thread on his site that appeared in the Liverpool Mercury beginning in 1888. As noted before, with permission from Howard, I am posting some of the shorter articles rather than the longer articles that just carry information on the case that appeared elsewhere.

You will see that one of the reports below is about a "Belfast suspect" named John Foster on trial at Liverpool Country Magistrates Court for a robbery he had committed at the house of a Crosby man.

    Hi all

I have begun a blog on the Casebook: Jack the Ripper site. I kick off with a blog posting on "The Question of Jack the Ripper and the Jews" featuring photographs kindly provided by John Bennett.

    Chris,
I watched the programme, related to the link below, this evening; Prediction. Part of the show was taken up with a US policeman who specialises in tracking down serial killers using mathematic formulas. He seemed to conclude the the ripper had a connection with or lived in Flower & Dean Walk. Has this ever come up before?

New to me, Oudeis, but thanks for the link. Unfortunately I can't get the video to play here in the U.S. but probably one of my UK colleagues can play it. I'll let you know what they say.

    Hello Oudeis

Here's feedback from Phil Kettingley at JtR Forums about that program that covered the Ripper case. You can also read my reply to Phil below.

Quote Originally Posted by Phil Kellingley View Post

I've got a number of problems with Rossmo's method:

    1. By his own admission you need at least 6 sites for it to be reasonably accurate. He used 5.
    2. His theory uses a grid system - because most US cities/towns are grid based. Victorian London wasn't.
    3. Although the basics of what he does are OK (and can be verified by work from people like David Canter) his method requires the introduction of some variables that are more or less pure guesswork.

It's one of those things I'm working on - but trying to use better methodology than Rossmo. I don't disagree with his findings - I said the JTR was an inhabitant of Flower and Dean street over 25 years ago (possibly Thrawl Street) based purely on the evidence given at the inquests. Rossmo is the acknowledged expert in this area and his methods and software are used by police departments all over the world but they will only provide a reasonably good estimate of where a perpetrator lives. They are not 100% pin point accurate.

His JTR analysis is available, I believe, somewhere on the net or in his book.

I believe that Rossmo has been discussed in this forum [JtR Forums] before, so it might repay a search of the forum to find out what was said.
    Hi Phil

Many thanks for this feedback. I realize that from your explanation you are using a similar methodology to Kim Rossmo although I must say it strikes me as being a bit "pin the tail on the donkey." I am similarly skeptical of the Scotland Yard efit of Jack the Ripper that came out several years ago, shown below. Yes the killer might have looked like that but just as likely he might not. Such things are conjectural and are not really evidence based -- although each approach, yours, Rossmo's, and the efit have the veneer of "science" and thus will (maybe) impress some people. Sorry to be a doubting thomas, Phil.

    All the best

    Chris

More than grid verses organic street plans there is also the ease of travel, major roads, parks, back alleys, rail etc. Then you get into road works, strikes and so on.
Given that serial killers target at random though the killer is freed up from any consideration of the habits of his victims and perhaps it is only his own needs to get safe, not be detected and ease of travel that may give clues to his whereabouts.
So your friend, with his more sophisticated approach may be on to something.

It's hardly likely that any definitive outcome would be recognised. That would be something for posterity to sort out.

    Hi all

Some of you may know that one alleged Jack the Ripper victim, Carrie Brown, murderered in Brooklyn, New York, April 23-24, 1891 is said to have been born in Liverpool, although she supposedly came to the United States as a young girl. On JtR Forums there has been discussion of her origins and of her gravesite in Salem, Massachusetts.

Part of the idea (unproven) that she was born in Liverpool comes from the following newspaper article:

    Trenton Times, New Jersey, USA
    27 April 1891

    The "Ripper's" Victim.
    Salem, Mass., April 27.

"Jack the Ripper's American victim is still remembered in Salem. Her story is one of the saddest ever penned. She was born in Liverpool, England in 1832. As a girl she was known as Caroline Montgomery. She landed with her parents at New York and settled with them when still a child in Brooklyn, N.Y., where she grew into a pretty girl. Then she met Captain James Brown, of this city. He was but eighteen years old when he married her. Her husband brought her to Salem. . . ."

    Best regards

James Maybrick has some competition. . . .

The Autobiography of Jack the Ripper by James Carnac, due Jan 19, 2012 according to the listing on Amazon. Hardcover. Sign up with them to be notified when this item becomes available, if you so wish. My bookcase is already full so I may or may not get it.

Here's more on this alleged Ripper diary from a BBC news story from 2009:

The Star, Largest Circulation of Any Evening Paper in the Kingdom.
    LONDON. SATURDAY, 17 NOVEMBER, 1888.

    Revenged on "Jack the Ripper."

At Liverpool yesterday a young man named Bramwell was charged with damaging a wax figure at an exhibition. Mr. Raffles asked what the figure was, and he was informed that it was the figure of "Jack the Ripper." Bramwell had only landed in Liverpool two days previously from Canada, and on seeing the figure at the exhibition he expressed a determination to smash it. - He was ordered to pay the damage and costs.

    Hi Max

If it is the book I am thinking of, edited by Nathan Braund and Maxim Jakubowski, it has good information in it so it is a worthwhile choice.
