Default Have Peel finally shown their hand?

This 'Manchester-based' company is putting off the expansion of the Port of Liverpool but going ahead with ?100m on Salford Port because it is better connected to the West Coast Line. Media City is already topping out - a huge blow to the Culture Capital.

Perhaps they will drop Liverpool Waters and Wirral Waters next; perhaps they were always going to. Liverpool Waters is now intrinsic to Liverpool Vision's plan for the city. Certainly, Peel are now ideally placed to block Liverpool's progress if they wanted to and a Peel man is now chairman of the NWDA.

Seen lots of these plans for Merseyside and not much happens. I was amazed to see us getting this far, with all the new builds etc. Trouble with Manchester is it's geographical position and its poulation catchment area. It will always beat us on that account alone. Mnachesters councillors do appear to grab any opppertunity they can. Ours seem eager to miss out when ever they can.

As with any private land owner whether it be Peel and the whole dock system or a bloke with a bombdie on the corner of the street, if they don't put forward and action plans to do something with it within a certain amount of time, the council should have something implemented in the sale contract to make them.

Manchester is not in a better geographical position. It is one side of the empty Pennines, in the bottom right hand corner of the north west. Across the Pennines is the Yorkshire economic capital Leeds. Liverpool is easy to get to and North Wales is across the rivers. Ireland and the Isle of Man are in easy reach. Wrexham wants to be on electric Merseyrail with direct Liverpool centre and airport access - borderlands line.

Liverpool is being kept back over Manchester. The point about no direct airport rail connections proves that.

Peel were responsible for the Mill town canal development that made many docks shallow by infilling so they could make money. Deep sea ships cannot berth city centre docks. They only understand inland barges. Bizarrely, they fill in deep water Liverpool docks and keep inland Manchester docks deep.

Have little faith in Peel to deliver anything.

Deprived of its unique dockland waters Liverpool
becomes a Venice without canals, just another city, no
longer of special interest to anyone, least of all the
tourist. Would we visit a modernised Venice of filled in
canals to view its modern museum describing
    how it once was?

Manchester has always been the commercial capital of the north west. That is up and till now. Consider the implications of being in a European boom when it comes. Liverpool is well situated to in get on the act. Manchester rose on the back of the cotton trade and Atlantic traffic Liverpool made that possible. However consider the commercial triangle of Dublin Belfast and Liverpool and also the port of Glasgow to an extent, this is our corner of Europe what does the future hold?

Liverpool Corporation mortgaged the city to build the first wet dock in the world.

A few renegades sold out to Manchester via the Ship Canal.

Our Port is a mainstay. Isn't about time we ousted these absentee landlords?!!

It has NOT. Liverpool was. Liverpool was a world city. The first title of the East Lancs Rd was, Liverpool-East Lancashire Road. The road from the big city to east Lancashire, where Manchester was.

The ship canal made little difference to Liverpool's trade. The deepening of the channel to Eastham took current an flow from the south docks which required more dredging. About the only negative of the canal.

You're right Waterways, Liverpool was. Not since the sixties though, and probably before. Manchester has well overtaken us. I don't agree with that, but I reckon it's a fact. What Manchester has done has been fantastic, except for the Trafford Centre. Liverpool are way behind, but hopefully catching up fast. Gotta keep running, can't afford to stand still for a second. If any investment even hints at coming to Liverpool, we should have a team of people there to make it happen.

Manchester was manufacturing - the industrial revolution - cotton in particular.

Liverpool had the banks and consulates and was indeed the 2nd city of the British Empire at one time.

every cloud has a silver lining and the recession has achieved one great thing, it has put a stop to the march of peel holdings in our city.

Is that a good thing Stan? They have a lot of investment cash.

It seems they actually don't have that much. Like everybody else it all borrowed.

What actually have Peel delivered? Lots of hype and artist's impressions though.

I know they made deep water docks into inland canal bargeways.
