Deprived of its unique dockland waters Liverpool
becomes a Venice without canals, just another city, no
longer of special interest to anyone, least of all the
tourist. Would we visit a modernised Venice of filled in
canals to view its modern museum describing
how it once was?

I wander if they pump the water back into the Mersey?
You would think if it had been seeping through the sandstone it would be somewhat filtered, if United Utilities were to install a desalination plant this water could be redirected to a reservoir!
The water was used to pour into the drains to flush them as there was blockage problem at the time. The water is not potable. It is a reasonably constant temperature being heated, or cooled, by the earth as it seeps in from the river above.
