This all started after that copper down south clipped that scally round the ear a good few years back - now we live with the evolutional result - that criminals can lead a charmed life, fearful of possibly a few months for carrying a gun or 3 years with good behaviour for killing someone, leaving the coppers no choice but to harrass the rest of us law abiders who commit the most trivial of demeanours to bear what toothless bite they have left. Cameras can do their job anyway can't they? Cheaper and good at capturing number plates. And they dont take breaks (when they work anyway - funny how they only break down during a crime)

And Who wants to catch criminals anyway in this day and age of equality for all (unless you happen to be ordinary and law abiding?)

Its not a nanny state - the suited ones (who it appears are just as criminal as these scally lot are) are terrified of the power that Europe and the global market holds over them. Terrified of upsetting other nations that seemingly control whats left of the UK, for their own gain. the government in power now have so little regard for the people it was elected by, trying too hard to please everyone else and get themselves rich of the back of it.

They had the opportunity to stamp on this years ago (just a thought - look at the dock strikes, and miners strikes - they directly threatened the governments authority and standing in the global marketplace, and they did all in their reach to stamp on it). Now the population stands at risk from a potentially higher risk of creating a state so unable to protect its own citizens from its unruly elements and gangs to the extent that these people now own the law, and its sieve like combination of loopholes and get out clauses, and instead they would rather we its citizens take the blame for their unwillingness to react and stamp out such a vicious threat when it was possible by blaming everyone but themselves for letting it get to near endemic proportions. Its our own fault.

They can't handle the problem, so it appears because of that incompetence they wont, as the global market an economy is more important and deserves all the attention.

So continue, Mr UK Government. Let the babies die by the hand of their parents, and the schoolgirls get raped by schoolboys and hooded rats. Let the Fathers get stamped to death outside their homes and murdered on a night out. They'll get a few years at best and we'll all be happy.

Its only your own citizens that are at risk anyway, isn't it. Take our tax and run. Spend it on that second mortgage and porn.

This country is run by a bunch of **** Mr Arkwrights. Only in this sitcom, they get their hands trapped in the till.

    G-G- Granville!!

When I was a lad I loved going to Norris Green to see my Uncle John he was the local window cleaner, quite a character and a bit of a cowboy. We would go into the Western and I would shake hands with all the locals whilst Uncle John would assure them all I was destined for great things. Then after a few pints it was Al Jolson time with all the theatricals. I had two cousins John and Paddy they boxed and played football for Saint Theresa?s. It was a much different place then being a green suburb and more jobs about. However it seems now that it is different. Trouble is as a sociologist I recognize the demonization of a place name. I know about the deterioration of both Croxteth and Norris Green. However I watched Liverpool 8 decline and saw all the attendant problems. So from a detached perspective if we look past the amplification and understandable reaction towards this social deviance we are probably being of more service to the people who remain in the area. Many people who remain on these estates suffer from the rise in social deviance and crime. I think lack of identity is another problem because once where there was pride in the working class existence of the area, sadly that has gone with the work. Demonizing the youth of the area is not the answer because the deviant behavior is within a minority it always is as the infrastructure of Liverpool has not completely collapsed and moral codes do still exist. We need social policy and commitment and also less resignment from the problems that exist. Easy for me to say I don?t live there. Thing is I will go out and vote here where I live, and I will seek constructive debate on issues. If we amplify or create moral panics over problems we often find they remain. The reestablishment of identity is difficult in such decline yet the fragmentation of identity is not desired. Quite often stereotypical images are put forward by the local media. You can ask yourselves what happened to their identities? I would like to think I could pop into the Western and have a pint and think back on those wonderful funny days I spent with Uncle John

Paddy I don't think anyone wants to demonize the youth in its entirety, god knows theres a huge majority of good lads and lasses out there. But already thre are too many of the spineless wannabe ones causing all the problems. I moved away from the area near where this happened because of it, and the councils utter refusal to help, and the Polices complete lack of interest because (quote) 'we lived on the police boundary and it confuses us which station is responsible for your area'.

Utter crap, and see the result. We heard and saw similar things happen there on a regular basis, and we left for fear of our lives. Sounds dramatic, but really, we did. Apathy doesn't help, but I suppose, how can you blame people for that when they know that the protection they pay the council so handsomely for is just not available to ordinary Joe?

It took the tragic and unnecessary death of an innocent Boy (and a NATIONAL outcry) to start the ball rolling in Norris Green/Croxteth. Unfortunately, it appears thats what it takes nowadays for authorities to get things done.

I hope the police will close all the roads for all my friends at my funeral......

Value of life vs cost and outcomes = public lose. Simple maths.

    Default Mentalities

Thank you for your informed reply Corky. The title of the thread refers to the mentality of kids in the Norris Green area. After a bit of reflection I have tried to encapsulate how I felt as a youngster going out there. I recall it being a very strong community and Catholicism playing a big part in the life of the community and the socialization. I think a lot of people moved out there from Scotland Road. I don?t subscribe to the view that twenty years ago you could leave your front door open without the fear of being burgled. However I do recall that as kids the violence was different in the fact that if someone called your bluff you had to stand your ground. To that extent it was a tough existence. You cannot be brave everyday, all hard cases know that. The culture was football and boxing. So the mentality then was very much being able to prove yourself at something. There was also the Technical College alternative and boys who served apprenticeships had the door to a future opened for them. So what?s the difference? Well the idea that dysfunctional people have taken over overnight is I feel quite misleading. Dysfunctional people have always been around. The undermining of class consciousness is I feel more about where it is at. Let?s say I set up a youth club in the area and tell the kids that they now live in a deprived area owing to the fact that jobs have gone to cheap labour elsewhere. I also tell them that should be politically aware and more organized. That they should educate themselves, and become active in changing their world. And that they should be aware that employers sometimes become the enemy. Well would that go down well? Yet I would not want to be involved with people of my generation who have made money out of living off their misery. We all know that the drugs trade is controlled by gangs and they are not teenagers, that?s just their foot soldiers. I mean consider this you?re a teenager growing up in the district and you want to survive. Well rule breaking is rule following so to survive in the gang mentality you follow the code of that culture. Well you can take the position that you have heard it all before and that a more punitive approach is necessary in dealing with delinquency. Also you can assume that drug taking is a social choice, or even a recreational activity. The point being that we help generate the mentality of the young. The young construct a view of their personal world by life experience. Role models play a big part in the construction of those views. I don?t have an answer I have opinions that?s what makes for a refusal to go along with what sounds good in the bars or works canteen. Money coming into the area and spent wisely would be very welcome. Yet as regards the mentality is it not up to people to get involved in changing that? Perhaps a world champion at some sport will come along and alter the identity paths these kids choose. Failing that you can always let them know that you would prefer them to be different.

    Well said Corky & Paddy.

Like I said "Norris Green was known once as a posh area".
What do people outside Norris Green think of the place ? They must think it's a bad place to live now, especially after the recent gang rape

I went from a posh Yorkshire suburb to living in Norris Green ... it was...interesting should've got a job instead of having babies hehe!

Anyone know why they wear those ridiculous hats? With the flaps....?

I have no suggestions whatsoever for the local youth the mentality is traditionally ingrained from birth as far as I can tell.... I can't see that the Rhys Jones murder has made any difference, in fact it went a little bit madder than usual for a long while after!... I used to feel safe walking around here as a young woman (the lads mostly just attacked each other!) but over the last year or so I really don't... although, without the tan or blonde hair I think they might not even realise I'm female *yay*

Where abouts in Nogzy did you move to? That must of been a shock

The hat's with the flaps...I assume you mean the Lowe Alpine (Lowies). The flaps are supposed to stop wind getting at the ears. In most of the kids cases it's to stop their tiny brains rolling out of the ears.
