There was a good toy shop on Breck rd during the 1960's called Toyland.
Looking through the yellow pages just now, i'm amazed at the lack of an out and out toy shop barring ToyRUs.
Model Zone in the precinct which was Beatties.

There used to be a large toy shop on Walton Road past the shop the wranglers shop on the same side,the wranglers shop was owned buy a Jewish family and the toy shop was 2 blocks down? I used to go there every friday and buy a couple of animals for me zoo collection...that was about early 1960's mid 60's?
Yeah, City Models on Elliot Street was run by a Polish fella then it moved to Stanley Street down in the basement next to the barbers. Big Paul who sadly died had it then.
The one in Bold Street moved into the Ace Place in Dale Street for a very short while before moving to Seel Street before it closed down.
I remember this shop and I was asking my Dad if he remembered what it was called and he reckoned there wasn't a shop there. I remember waiting in line when the first eagle eyes action man came out and the same for Tommy Stone, the first, maybe only, black action man.
I think that it may have been Harris' but I'm not sure.
There was T Lees up the top end that sold everything but not sure about Toys. I also remember a big warehouse type toy shop on Bold Street, the left hand side going up, past Slater Street on the opposite corner called King Kong. A big board cut out of the gorilla on the corner of the building. It just had a big centre space with counters on the 3 sides of the shop with high shelves all around behind the assistants.

The owner of City Models was "Gerry Van Der Hoek" - Dutch not Polish who was still there at Stanley Street. However, he became involved in a Restaurant business on the Wirral if I recall and Paul took it over.

I think that was called Bascombe's. Not far from Arnot St Secondary Modern that became Alsop Lower School (eventually made way for a supermarket - wonder what happened to Fred Flintstone)
Big treat; early 60's used to go to Bascombe's with my mum every month or so to get the latest Corgi car.
When I first started coming over the water it was to go their with my mates.Would this be the one smurf, another fave of mine.
It was a cracking shop.
Not many stores any more...
...and the ones that are there don't sell tools or bits-n-pieces.
I bought a small Meccano model for my sister's grand-son last year, and his not too delicate fingers couldn't hold the little nuts in place in some of the corners of the model. Heck, that was the hardest part of Meccano when I was a kid too...
So no problem, I'll just buy him a hemostat to hold the parts...
I went all over Liverpool looking for one - specialty hardware stores and model stores - and never did find one. Even the model train store near Penny Lane didn't sell parts/supplies/tools for people to build their own stuff any more - just pre-packaged stuff.
In the end I got one from our local Harbor Freight store and mailed it back along with my mum's car keys that I accidentally exported to the US...

PS I don't think anyone in the thread mentioned the hobby store that was in Bold Street for a while - part of a chain, IIRC - update - it was mentioned...
