    Default Maghull

    Coronation Cottages

Further along Damfield facing Maricourt School.

One of the village churches on Station Road.

    Tree view court shops.

Shops of an older period, facing.

    ADVERTISING

    The Great Mogul pub.

Looking Northerly along the railway track at the station.

The specific reason for my visit to Maghull is because i'm endevouring to research 4 houses on Kennessee Green which is part of Station Road. Believed to have been built in 1869, they are numbered from No.11 through to 17 inclusive. No.11 is called Lynwood House, No.15 is Penlee.

After consulting with the LRO who referrred me to Sefton R.O. at Crosby library, this turned up zilch as did their referral to Lancashire R.O. at Preston. It appears that local practitioner Dr. John Rowlands has written a few books on Lydiate and Maghull so having had to luck in Ormskirk's Waterstones my next stop is the library unless anyone here can kindly shed any light on their history.

    Here are Nos.11 and 13.

    Numbers 15 and 17.

Great pics, can't help on the houses but did you know that the IRA blew up one of the swing bridges in 1939, we only know this as my partner has research a lil bit about the area as we want to move there. There is no stragic reason why they blew it up apperantly.

Didn't realize it was Maghull though I'd heard of such things as part of S-plan so not sure about lack of strategy. Rubbish strategy perhaps.

    'The Old House' Maghull.

Not sure how old the building is or if there is any history attached, but someone told me that they thought it may have been a small school in the old days.

    Good photographs, everyone.

Lindy, the style of architecture with those classical pilasters, akin to flat columns, would indicate that the building is probably Georgian, probably built circa 1810 or so I should think. While I have not been able to find out the exact age of the house, I understand it once belonged to the family of Frank Hornby, the inventor of Meccano, and that it was from this house that Mr. Hornby was taken to hospital where he died.

I just found this old thread - http://www.yoliverpool.com/forum/sho...-Meccano/page3

I'm a bit confused now as I thought Frank Hornby's house was in Station rd and has a blue plaque. I'm sure I did post a photo once but can't locate it.
I pass Station rd often and have taken pics of it. Can't find them anywhere just now ! I must have lost them

Ged, haven't you got a pic of it on your site ? Also, I'm sure GD would have a photo of it somewhere.

Bit confusing as Dazza's post in the link shows a different house to the one I'm thinking of, and it's called 'The Old House' - looking quite a lot different to The Old House I photographed the other day.

Ah, I see - he lived in 2 places. I didn't know he'd lived in Maricourt.
    Thanks Stanier.

My sister worked in The Alt when it first opened. I've had a few good nights in there.
