    Default Nice one

    My contribution: St George joke

St George was fighting with the dragon and the dragon started getting the better of him. As he was kicking his head in a squirrel in a tree saw what was going on and threw an acorn on the dragons head and knocked him out. St George then slew the dragon. He then looked up at the squirrel in the tree and said

    'Nice one squirrel'
Oh as I was young and easy in the mercy of his means,
Time held me green and dying
Though I sang in my chains like the sea.

I'm flagging, but it's just my age!

Don't have a flag, either, but I do have a dragon here, does that count?

Why is St George the patron saint of England? He was NOT English. Shouldn't we have an Englishman such as St Alban, St Cuthbert, or St Edmund as our patron saint?

    Hi HOWIE,
Like a lot of this stuff,it's not really straightforward! St. Alban was a roman soldier, his origins uncertain, though he was martyred in England.St.Cuthbert was actually a Scot, and St. Edmund, a saxon from Nuremberg, which might explain why he is revered by the Eastern Orthodox church!!! So, St. George would seem as good a choice as any, if your going have this sort of thing, I mean,he did kill a dragon, like! Steve.

I've just read the relevant entries in Wikipedia, (see below).

Still don't reckon St George was the best choice. Can we have a vote!

Are there any true English ones?

I would say St. Gerard if we're gonna have just any old Johnny Foreigner.

Why - cos I'm named after him.

St. Christopher is famous too but he's Greek or summat.

    Default George

Saint Christopher got the sack by the Vatican as he was too far fetched. Coming from that crew it is a bit rich don't you think? I prefer the cross of Saint George to the Union flag. When the bolsheviks came to power they created May Day and told the workers that was their holiday as they had so many saints they were never in work.England and saint George go well together in my view, makes one dream of Knights and maidens.
