Re Carved Insects on Blackburn Assurance Building:
In heraldry the Bee can be used to represent the initial 'B' (in this case 'B' for Blackburn). It appears on Blackburn Borough Councils' coat of arms also. Bees can also represent other things.
Lots of decorations on buildings are connected to the various symbols used in heraldry...Lancashire Roses, Fleurs-de-lys, Lions etc. The important families of the old townships/manors also have their own symbols which you can find around Liverpool.
