    Yeah, they were boss!
There's a similar thing in the jaguar house at Chester Zoo, except their rope is suspended over a pool of fish. If one falls, a fish has an anty meal. Scary if you're an ant!!

£300k for exotic Egyptian collection's new gallery
    Aug 16 2006
By Alan Weston Daily Post Staff

LIVERPOOL'S prestigious Egyptian collection is to get a new look - thanks to a £300,000 grant.

World Museum Liverpool is one of 43 institutions across the country to benefit from grants totalling almost £4m, jointly funded by the Department of Culture Media and Sport (DCMS) and the Wolfson Foundation Museums & Galleries Improvement Fund.

The grant will involve completely refurbishing the museum's Egyptian gallery, which is now 30 years old.

The collection is the museum's largest single group of antiquities. It is made up of about 15,000 items, almost 5,000 of which came from a donation by Liverpool goldsmith and antiquarian Joseph Mayer in 1867.

It was further expanded during the late 19th and early 20th centuries when the museum supported various excavations undertaken in Egypt.

The new look gallery will tell the story of Egypt's modern legacy as pioneers of science, art and architecture.

The rediscovery of Egypt will be portrayed through the stories and artefacts discovered by the later excavations.

The great dynasties will be explored, in addition to the pre-dynastic origins of Egypt, its people and geography. Thanks to inscriptions, tomb paintings and objects from the collections a picture of everyday life will be built, from fishing, farming, irrigation, engineering and warfare to diet, fashion, music and dance.

Audio visual presentations will recreate voices of long ago, bringing to life the personalities and characters of the ancient civilisation. A highlight of the gallery will be a recreation of a tomb exploring themes of life, death and eternity.

The new-look gallery is due for completion in 2008 as part of the European Capital of Culture celebrations.

Dr Ashley Cooke, head of antiquities at National Museums Liverpool, said: "The Egyptian collection is of great international significance and is known worldwide by Egyptologists.

"I am looking forward to increasing the public awareness of this fabulous collection and developing a gallery that reflects Liverpool's strong connection with the study of ancient Egypt."

Also benefiting from the funding package is Ellesmere Port's Boat Museum, which is to receive £40,000.

This will be used to help towards the conservation and interpretation of the historic boat collection, which is the largest in the world.

Culture Minister David Lammy said: "This year, the DCMS/Wolfson Museums & Galleries Improvement fund is giving out more grants than in any previous round - enabling museums and galleries to improve the care of their collections and make them more accessible and enjoyable for the public."

I suppose a pay increase is merited but nonetheless, these walkouts send a poor message at this time when we want people to come to Liverpool to enjoy the Year of Culture.

Fourth strike day at city museums

More than 250 staff from Liverpool's museums and galleries have staged their fourth one-day strike in a dispute over pay agreements.

This is the fourth one-day strike in
    three months

Conservators and administrators as well as archivists and other specialist staff are involved in the row.

They claim an imposed pay offer is less than half the rate of inflation.

Six sites of National Museums Liverpool (NML) have been affected by the one-day strike action, which is the fourth in three months.

Default Egyptian tombs mummies and artefacts

ONE of the finest collections of Egyptian tombs, mummies and artefacts in the world will open its doors in Liverpool today.

Among the 1,500 exhibits on show is one of the world?s great treasures ? a vividly-coloured belt of the last great Pharaoh, Rameses III ? which is on display for the first time since before the Second World War.

Amazingly, the exhibition owes much to legendary nurse Florence Nightingale and the real-life explorer and author who helped spawn the Indiana Jones character.

Curator Ashley Cooke, whose PhD in Egyptian tombs comes from the University of Liverpool, said: ?No other civilisation in world history has captured the imagination quite like Ancient Egypt, the first nation state.

?Today their wonderful, haunting tombs and all they left behind continue to exert an endless fascination. The World Museum Liverpool is in a prime position to tell the story as we have one of the finest collections anywhere.?

The collection come from some odd sources.

A substantial number of the artefacts at the museum once belonged to Lady with the Lamp Florence Nightingale.

In 1949, the museum was trying to get its collection together again after a World War Two bomb wreaked havoc on the building.

An appeal was answered by those in charge of the pioneering nurse?s collection that she had obtained about 100 years earlier.

Other items are part of the legacy left behind by Sir Henry Rider Haggard, the swashbuckling author and tomb raider behind King Solomon?s Mines and the fictional character that spawned Indiana Jones.

Grippingly, the exhibition includes the mummy said to have inspired Sir Rider Haggard?s classic fantasy adventure She, about a beautiful queen who lives 2,000 years waiting for her lost love, before shrivelling up into a pile of dust.

ANCIENT Egypt is at World Museum Liverpool, William Brown Street, now and admission is free.
