    Default TITANIC Anniversary

Today April 15th is 97 years Since the Titanic sank. Owned by the Liverpool based White Star Line.

April 14: Several ice reports are received by the crew of the Titanic.

11:39 p.m.: The Titanic is steaming along. Suddenly, lookouts see an iceberg dead ahead, 55 feet above the water. They sound the warning bell and telephone the bridge. The helmsman is ordered to make a hard turn and the engine room is told to shut down. But the side of the ship brushes the iceberg.

The impact is hardly noticed by many of the passengers.

11:50 p.m.: Captain Edward J. Smith asks for a visual inspection of the damage. Water has poured in and risen 14 feet in the front part of the ship.

    April 15:

12:00 a.m.: Smith is told the ship can only stay afloat for a couple of hours. He orders the distress call.

12:05 a.m.: Orders are given to lift the lifeboats. But there is not enough room in the lifeboats for everyone.

2:20 a.m.: The Titanic, filled with water, breaks in two and sinks vertically into the sea. 1,517 people lost their lives.

One year ago today I was on the QE2 sailing from New York for Southampton. We stopped directly over the TITANIC, on the 96th Anniversary of the sinking.
We had a Service out on the after Deck. The Gurkha security men formed a guard of Honour and then two wreaths were cast into the sea over the wreck followed by two minutes silence, then they blew the Last Post on a bugle.
A very strange sensation to be on top of the TITANIC on that Anniversary.
The nearest Ice Berg was 25 miles away. It was raining and blowing acold wind and rough sea.

Naturally, we wanted to have the main news item for Hillsborough but not a jot was mentioned about this day for the Titanic, which I find a bit sad.

What a day of mixed feelings for both near and far.

I've been a member of the enclopedia Titanica forum since watching that 'conspiracy theory' programme on tv some years back regarding one ofher sister ships the olympic. All a load of hogwash actually but wanted to see their take on it, some very factual bods on that forum. Like watching the documentaries on them going down to it etc.

Switching ships was a common insurance fraud in those days. However there is enough proof to say the Titanic was the Titanic and not the Olympic. BTW, my Dad worked on the Olympic.

I never knew that the Titanic sank on 15 April I find that very interesting. It is a date etched in all are memories.
Oh as I was young and easy in the mercy of his means,
Time held me green and dying
Though I sang in my chains like the sea.
