LIVERPUDLIAN John Yates took over as Britain?s most senior anti-terror officer yesterday.

His promotion came as Bob Quick, the former Metropolitan Police assistant commissioner and head of specialist operations, resigned over a security blunder.

?Yates of the Yard? as he is affectionately known, was born in 1959 to a family of doctors in the city. He went to the elite public school Marlborough College and read history at King?s College London.

He joined the Met in 1981 and has been senior investigating officer in more than 20 murder enquiries.

A keen Liverpool FC fan, he is married with two children and enjoys long distance cycling and cricket.
